Managed Portfolio Sleeve: When Cash Gets Invested

How the Managed Portfolio Sleeve works, what lands there, and what determines whether the Rebalancer invests excess cash.

Overview

The Managed Portfolio Sleeve holds the account's target cash, plus anything that belongs to the account rather than to a strategy. This is the only sleeve the system considers when flagging an account for High Cash or Low Cash in the Rebalancer.

What Lands Here

  • ALL custodial direct trade-away activity is posted to this sleeve

  • Cash activity posts to the Managed Portfolio Sleeve if there is no active CMA schedule (bypassing the Funding Sleeve)

  • CMA deposit proceeds arrive here after leaving the Funding Sleeve

What Determines Whether Cash Gets Invested

The Rebalancer invests excess cash when the cash balance breaks the upper threshold of the target weighting. If cash is inside the band, no rebalance flag is raised and the account won't appear in the High Cash queue.

Cash Status

Rebalancer Behavior

Above upper threshold

Account flagged as High Cash → Rebalancer generates buy trades

Within threshold band

No flag raised → no trades generated → cash held at target weight

Below lower threshold

Account flagged as Low Cash → Rebalancer generates sell trades

Cash target weightings and thresholds are set at the advisor's discretion.

ℹ️ Note: The Rebalancer only sees the Managed Portfolio Sleeve when evaluating cash. Funding Sleeve cash and Protected Sleeve cash are invisible to the Rebalancer. High cash in either of those sleeves will NOT trigger a High Cash rebalance flag.
