Best Practices: Cash Management
Before Running a CMA Transaction
Choose the right method — if using the Rebalancer method, confirm a target portfolio is assigned, or the account may be liquidated to cash
For accounts with many holdings and smaller deposit amounts, use Rebalancer — not Pro Rata
Review the trade preview before submitting
Don't create multiple schedules for the same day with different methods — the transfer occurrences will fail
Monitoring the Funding Sleeve
Regularly check for residual cash or uninvested funds sitting in the Funding Sleeve
A "Complete" transfer occurrence status does not confirm cash was invested — always verify the Funding Sleeve balance after recurring schedules run
A large Funding Sleeve balance does NOT automatically get deployed — it requires an explicit CMA deposit action
Custodial Trade-Aways
If you trade directly at the custodian while a CMA schedule is active, the cash will reconcile to the Managed Portfolio Sleeve — not the Funding Sleeve
This can cause a Managed Portfolio debit if the cash used at the custodian was sitting in the Funding Sleeve
Resolution: submit a Custom CMA deposit to move Funding cash to the Managed Portfolio, then rebalance the remainder
Rebalancer Cash Settings
Set cash thresholds above 0% — a 0% threshold can cause excessive and unnecessary trading
Always review tax impact before approving rebalance trades
Approve batches same day — unapproved batches expire overnight
Q&A: Cash Movement
Why is there cash sitting in the Funding Sleeve that isn't being invested?
Funding Sleeve cash only deploys on the CMA schedule date, or via an explicit CMA deposit. New deposits that arrive outside the scheduled amount are not automatically swept.
My CMA says "Complete" — why isn't the cash in the portfolio?
"Complete" means the transfer occurrence ran, not that trades were built. If Pro Rata was used on an account with many holdings, individual lot sizes may have fallen below minimums and no trades were generated. Check the Funding Sleeve balance and switch to the Rebalancer method.
Why didn't my CMA generate any trades?
The amount may be within the target band (Rebalancer method), the Funding Sleeve balance may be too low, a scheduling conflict caused the transfer occurrence to fail, or Pro Rata couldn't build valid lots across all holdings.
Why is my account flagged for High Cash when the custodian balance looks fine?
The Rebalancer only evaluates the Managed Portfolio Sleeve. If excess cash is in the Funding or Protected Sleeve, it won't show as High Cash — but if the Managed Portfolio Sleeve is above threshold, the flag is correct.
Why does the custodian show more cash than I'd expect?
The custodian shows one blended number across all four sleeves. Each sleeve can be individually on-target while the combined figure looks high.
Why did a custodial trade-away create a negative in the Managed Portfolio Sleeve?
Custodial trades always post to the Managed Portfolio Sleeve. If the cash used was sitting in the Funding Sleeve, the Managed Portfolio goes into a debit. Fix: submit a Custom CMA deposit to move Funding cash over, then rebalance.
Why can't I cancel my CMA transaction?
Same-day transfer occurrences begin processing immediately and cannot be canceled. Contact Client Support at 561-559-7676.
Why did my account get liquidated to cash during a CMA?
A Rebalancer method CMA was submitted on an account without an assigned target portfolio. Always confirm a target is set before using the Rebalancer method.
Can cash move between the Funding Sleeve and the Protected Sleeve directly?
No. Cash must pass through the Managed Portfolio Sleeve. Use a CMA deposit to move Funding cash to the Managed Portfolio, then use the Move Positions button in Account Details to send it to the Protected Sleeve.
Will the Rebalancer automatically invest cash in my Funding Sleeve?
No. The Rebalancer only evaluates the Managed Portfolio Sleeve. Funding Sleeve cash is invisible to it and must be deployed via a CMA deposit.
