Set it up
Go to Agent > Personalization. The Instructions for Specter Agent modal opens.
Write your standing preferences in the Personal preferences box, in plain sentences. Save becomes active as soon as the box has text.
Click Save. The modal closes, and what you wrote applies to every chat with the Agent from here.
What we recommend including
Think of it as briefing someone joining your team on Monday.
Start with your role, your firm and where you're based.
Then your mandate: stages, geographies, sectors, cheque size. Be specific, because "early-stage tech" gives the Agent almost nothing to work with.
Say what to leave out. Telling the Agent you pass on consumer and hardware keeps those companies out of every answer.
Finish with how you want answers to look: how long, whether you want tables, and whether you want every figure labelled Reported or Estimated.
A worked example
This is ours. Edit it rather than starting from a blank box.
I'm a Partner at a seed fund in San Francisco. We invest in B2B infra, dev tools and AI apps, Pre-Seed to Series A, mostly US. We pass on consumer and hardware. I care most about the founding team, so flag technical founders coming out of the big labs. Keep answers short with sources linked. Always say whether a figure is Reported or Estimated, and name any field that's empty rather than filling the gap.
Weak: "I invest in early-stage tech."
Strong: "Pre-seed and seed only, $500k to $2M cheques, B2B software in the US and UK. Skip anything past Series A."
What to leave out
Anything that applies to a single question. These instructions run on every chat, so a one-off constraint belongs in the message.
💡 Tip: The Agent has no memory across chats yet, so nothing you say in one conversation carries to the next. Personalization and your saved Skills are what carry.
