Splash Sports is required by the IRS to issue tax forms to users who meet the earnings threshold. Here's everything you need to know — including how to make sure your information is correct before your form is mailed.
Who Receives a 1099-MISC?
Splash Sports issues a Form 1099-MISC to any user whose net earnings reach $600 or more in a calendar year. This applies to both:
Players — based on contest winnings minus entry fees and bonuses
Commissioners — based on rewards earned from running contests
Net Winnings = Total Contest Winnings − Entry Fees − Bonuses
If your net earnings are below $600, you won't receive a 1099-MISC from Splash — but you may still have a personal tax obligation. Consult a tax professional if unsure.
When Will I Receive My Form?
1099-MISC forms are filed by February 2 each year
Forms are mailed to the address on your account — expect to receive yours by February 20
Net winnings are calculated from all transactions between January 1 and December 31 of the prior year, with a final recalculation in January to capture all settled December transactions
How to Review or Update Your Tax Information
Make sure your address and Tax ID are correct before the end of January — address corrections after February 2 may require contacting the IRS directly.

Common Questions
Do I need to complete a W-9 every year? No — your W-9 stays on file once submitted. Only update it if your legal name, Tax ID, or address changes.
I won't reach $600 this year — do I still need a W-9? You only receive a 1099-MISC if net winnings reach $600. But completing your W-9 in advance avoids delays if you do qualify in the future.

What About 1099-K Forms from PayPal or Venmo?
If you use PayPal or Venmo for other purposes, those platforms may issue you a 1099-K separately — this is independent of any form from Splash Sports. The 1099-K doesn't distinguish between entry fees you collected and your personal income, which is why running paid contests through Splash (where Splash handles all funds) avoids this issue entirely. Consult a tax professional to understand how any 1099-K you receive interacts with your tax filing.
