This article will show how you can build your own Site Map or if you prefer to have this done for you, we offer a map‑building service, which you can learn about here.
Getting started with site maps
Go to your Site page (for example, “Leicester”).
Make sure you have added your Unit types and Units.
In the Map section, click Create to open Build mode.
Build mode and navigation
You build your site map in a full‑screen editor called Build mode. On the left, you will see tools and items you can add. On the right, you will see controls for moving around the canvas.

- minus icon | Zoom out |
Keyboard icon | Shows keyboard shortcuts |
💡 If you have a large site, use the zoom controls and arrows to quickly move between different areas of your map.
Adding units to the canvas
On the left‑hand sidebar, you will see a Units section. This shows all units you have created for the site.
To add a unit to the canvas:
Hover over a unit in the Units list.
Click Add when the button appears.
The unit will appear on the canvas in its correct relative size.
💡 Units are shown in relative scale to each other by default. For example, a 20 sq ft unit will appear twice the size of a 10 sq ft unit.
Resizing an Item
If you need to resize a unit or other item:
Select the item on the canvas.
Drag one of the corners to resize it manually.
Or, enter the exact dimensions in the left‑hand sidebar.
You can reset an item to its original size at any time by clicking Reset size.
Rotating items
To rotate a unit or item:
Select the item on the canvas.
Drag the rotation handle to turn it.
Or, enter an exact angle in the left‑hand sidebar.
Moving doors
To move a door on a unit:
Select the unit on the canvas.
Click Move door until the door appears on the correct side.
Remove items from the Canvas
To remove an item from the canvas:
Select the item with your cursor.
Click Remove unit in the left‑hand sidebar, or press Backspace on your keyboard.
Adding more Items
Click More items in the left‑hand sidebar to add extra details to your map, such as areas, walls, labels and icons.
More Items | What it does |
Background Image | Upload an image of your site and use it as a guide |
Area | Add a coloured area |
Wall | Add bounding walls |
Text | Add re-sizable text to the canvas |
Room | Add a nameable room to the canvas. This can also be resized |
Arrow | Add a re-sizable directional arrow to the canvas |
Direction | Show which way is North |
Toilet | Add a re-sizable toilet icon to the canvas |
Entrance | Show where the entrance is located |
Access | Add an access point to the canvas |
Lift | Show where the lifts are located on the canvas |
Stairs | Show where the stairs are located on the canvas |
Electrical | Show where the electrical boards are located |
Fire Extinguisher | Show where fire extinguishers are located |
💡 Use areas, walls and icons to make your map easy to understand at a glance.
Uploading a background image
If you already have a plan or drawing of your site, you can use it as a background image.
Click More items in the sidebar.
Select Background image.
Follow the instructions in the modal to upload and scale your image to match your units.
If replacing an existing background image, first click on the current image and select the delete/remove option before uploading the new one.
This helps you line up units and items accurately on top of your existing layout.

Adding coloured areas
You can add coloured areas to highlight parts of your site, such as buildings, floors or zones.
Click More items in the sidebar.
Select Area.
Choose a colour from the colour dropdown.
Adjust the opacity using the slider if needed.
Resize the area on the canvas to cover the correct region.
Coloured areas appear behind your units, keeping them visible.
Adding Bounding Walls
You can add Walls to show the physical boundaries of your facility.
Click More items.
Select Wall.
Place and resize the walls on the canvas to match your site.
Locking and Unlocking Items
You can lock background images, areas and walls so you do not move them by accident.
To lock an item:
Select the item on the canvas.
Click Lock position.
When no items are selected, you will see a list of lockable items in the left‑hand sidebar. Use the lock icons there to lock or unlock each item.
When no items are selected on the canvas, you will see a list of lockable items on the left sidebar. You can click on the lock icon here to lock and unlock different items.
Updating your Map
You can update your site map at any time:
Go to your Site page.
Click your Map.
Select Edit map to open Edit mode and make changes.
