Adding Alt-Text to Images for Accessibility - Available to Districts Upon Request

Updated this week

For: Teachers, School Admins, District Admins upon request

📌 Important: This feature is required for Colorado partner districts and schools. Other districts may also request to turn it on.

➡️ Once this feature is turned on for your district, adding alt-text will be required for all staff who share images, and cannot be turned off for individual users.

If you’d like to enable this feature for your district, please contact Support via the right-hand corner chat bot flow.

What Is Alt-Text?

Alt-text is a short description of an image. It helps people using screen readers understand what’s in the picture.

Supported Apps and Versions

Alt-text will only appear these app versions:

  • Family App: version 4.2446.5 or higher

  • Teacher App: version 8.2446.2 or higher

  • Admin App: version 3.2446.2 or higher

If you're able to see alt-text as part of the image attachment flow, please download the latest version of the TalkingPoints application.

How To Add Alt Text

On the Web

  1. Open a message and click the Add image or video icon.

  2. Pick the image you want to share.

  3. In the Image Alt Text box, type a short description. Click Attach Image to finish.

    • You must add alt text before you can attach the image.

On Mobile

  1. In a message, tap Camera to take a new photo, or Library to choose one.

  2. Type a short description in the Image Alt Text box. Tap Add to finish.

    • You must add alt text before you can attach the image.

How Families Experience Alt-Text

  • When families view images, they will see an ALT indicator.

  • If a family member uses a screen reader (VoiceOver on iOS or TalkBack on Android), the alt text will be read aloud when they highlight the message or open the image.
