Submitting your working availability

Learn how to submit your availability for shifts within Surfboard

If your schedules are planned according to your availability, for example, if you are a freelancer, student or casual worker, then you are probably used to sending emails, Whatsapp or Slack messages to your manager.

Well, good news - you can send your working availability to your manager from your Surfboard schedule!


How do I submit my availability?

Availability is a setting that can be toggled on or off for surfers to suit their contracts. If this applies to you, your manager should have enabled this feature for you already.

  • In Surfboard, you submit availability per week, so first navigate to the week that you want to submit your availability for.

  • Click on the availability widget at the top of your schedule

  • A modal will open giving you a list of your availability for that week. You will also see a summary of your availability compared to the contracted hours your manager entered in your profile.

  • Click 'add availability'

  • Select the day of the week you want to submit availability for

  • Next select the earliest and latest time you can work that day. If you can work at different times of the same day, you can submit them as separate blocks.

  • Click save

  • Your availability will instantly be sent to your managers who can view it in their account.


How can I edit or remove my availability?

If your plans change, then you may need to update your availability.

  • Navigate to the week which availability you need to edit

  • Click on the availability widget at the top of your schedule

  • A modal will open giving you a list of your availability for that week.

  • Click on the edit icon ✏️ next to the period you want to edit.

  • You can then change the day, start or end time of this shift. Alternatively, you can delete this block as well.

  • Your updated availability will instantly be sent to your managers who can view it in their account.


How do I know if my manager has seen my availability?

Any availability you submit, edit or delete is updated in your manager's schedule right away.

Managers can view your availability when scheduling shifts, so they can use this information to schedule shifts that fit around your other commitments.

When your schedule is ready, your manager will publish your schedule. Once published, your shifts will be shown in your surfer schedule. You will also be able to compare the hours you said you were available with the hours you've been given.


Can I tell my manager when I'm unavailable to work?

Some people may prefer to just tell their manager when they're unable to work instead.

Surfboard does not yet have this functionality, but our team are working on this as a future improvement for this feature. You can feedback any ideas or requests to our team at any time using our Intercom live chat.


Can I set up recurring availability?

If you have a recurring weekly commitment, for example because you're a student, care-giver or just have a hobby, you may want to submit the same availability multiple times.
