How to understand your payslip

How to read your payslip and understand the net amount you received

Written by Temper | Work to Live

When you work a shift, and the client checks it out by Wednesday at 10 AM the following week, you'll get paid on Friday. Your payslip will then be available in the app around the same time. This guide helps you understand your payslip, which is fully in Dutch. Also check the visual explainer.

Payslips are issued weekly

You receive a weekly payslip for each worked period. The contract date determines which payslip a shift appears on, not the payment date. If a shift is approved after the Wednesday deadline, the original payslip is updated rather than creating an entirely new one.

Each payslip indicates the number of shifts included and the corresponding period. For instance, a payslip labeled "Loonstrook periode 1 - 2025" refers to the payment for shifts worked during calendar week 1 of 2025.

Understanding your payslip sections

Your payslip is divided into 4 sections. Below, we explain each section and some common Dutch terms you’ll see.

1. Basic details

At the top of your payslip, you’ll find ‘Basisgegevens’, which contains some important personal information, such as your personnel number (personeelsnummer) and birth date (geboortedatum). This section also shows:

  • The type of income or ‘tabelkleur’ relevant for this payslip. “Wit" indicates it’s for employment salary.

  • The legal minimum wage (minimumloon) for your role.

  • Whether you have payroll tax credit (”LH korting”) enabled. ”Ja” here means you have it enabled, “Nee” means you don’t. Read more about payroll tax credit and how it affects your net wage in this article.

  • The contract type, which for Temper Staff is always listed as "onbepaalde tijd, nee" and as phase A.

2. Gross wages per assignment

This section, ‘Bruto bedragen per opdracht’ in Dutch, provides a detailed breakdown of your earnings for each shift. For every shift, you’ll see:

  • The client name and job title.

  • The total hours worked (”Standaard uren”) for that shift.

  • The basic hourly wage (”Bedrag”), which is different from the wage shown on the shift page in the app. The shift page includes surcharges and reservations, while this section separates them.

If applicable, surcharges are also listed, such as "Zaterdagtoeslag Uren 50%" (Saturday surcharge 50%). Additionally, the payslip shows reservations like holiday pay, vacation day accruals and set amounts for potential long-term illness. These are the amounts mentioned after “Vergoeding kort verzuim”, “Feestdagen”, “Extra verlofdagen” en “Bovenwettelijke vakantiedagen”.

The total gross wage for the week is listed at the end of this section (”Totaal bruto verdiensten deze periode”).

You can divide this amount by the total hours worked to match the hourly gross wage shown when you applied for the shift.

3. From gross to net wage

‘Van bruto naar netto’. This section explains how your net wage is calculated, breaking it down step by step. It starts with "totaal bruto verdiensten deze periode", which is your total gross earnings for the week. From this amount, taxes and premiums (belastingen en premies) are deducted. These include:

  • Income tax (”Loonheffingen”). Keep in mind that not having payroll tax credit enabled will increase the amount of income tax that is deducted from your salary.

  • Contributions for long-term illness (”Premie aanvulling ziektewetuitkering”).

  • Plus pension contributions, where 7,5% of your pensionable wage is deducted, and Temper adds another 15,9% to your pension with StiPP. Read more about it here.

If you’re eligible for travel allowance, this is shown under “Netto vergoedingen”, net compensations. The compensation per kilometer details the client, the number of kilometers reimbursed, and the amount per kilometer. The refundable distance might have a limit, depending on the relevant CAO.

At the bottom of this section, you’ll see "totaal netto", which is your total net pay. Below that, it states the amount transferred to your account and the payment date.

4. Reservations

The final section, ‘Overzicht reserveringen’ shows the reservations for holiday pay and vacation days once more. Since these amounts are paid out immediately, the "eind saldo" (final balance) is always zero. This section is primarily informational and confirms what’s already included in your net pay.
