Background
Formations can be seen in the Match Hub, Learning Objectives Grade Report and within Depth Charts. Your system will already have a list of 'System Formations' that have added through our dealings with many Football/Soccer clients throughout the years. This feature allows clubs to add new formations and/or manage what custom position each slot may have.
Access
To add/edit formations, users must have Performance Administrator user role to see the Performance tab options in the System section. If you do not have this access, please contact your Club Administrator/Superuser to request this.
To find the Custom Formations page, follow the steps below:
Select System
Performance tab
Custom Formations
Add New Custom Formations
In System, click the Custom Formations option from the Performance tab.
You should be presented with 2 tabs 'Custom Formations' and 'System Formations'.
If you select System Formations first, you will see the list of available formations.
If you wish to Add a new one, go back to the Custom Formations tab and see 'Add formation' section at the bottom.
You must enter a name and a description and the number of participants the formation is for i.e. 11 players.
To save time, you can choose to base your formation from an already existing formation i.e. a 4-3-3. This then allows you to adjust the necessary positions rather than all of the positions. If you wish to completely start a new one, select 'Create from blank'.
Finally, you will see a toggle option to show formation on Depth charts. Toggle that ON if you wish to use that formation has part of your succession planning tool.
Once you are happy > click the 'Add Custom Formation' button, bottom right.
You will then be presented with a pitch view where you can either drag and drop the playing shirts to build out your custom formation or edit the slots of the base position you choose on the previous page. You can Enable Snapping if you wish to move the shirts into set slots on the pitch rather than a free mode - this makes it easier to align shirts.
When you click a shirt to move it, you will also see option on the right hand side to assign a Custom Position. This has implications for the Match Hub and is a good way to ensure that any player selected in that slot (when using this formation' is assigned that custom position e.g. Player X in shirt number 2 for a 4-4-2 formation is given Right Wing Back position automatically. This can save time when entering Match information and ensure data quality is maintained.
PLEASE NOTE: If you cannot see any custom positions available you can configure these by going to System > Performance Tab > Performance Options > Toggle ON 'Use Custom Positions' > Update Settings.
Then to create the custom positions, from the Performance Tab in System, you can select Custom Positions > Enter custom position name/Base Position/Abbreviation > Add Position.
Once you are happy with the new Custom Formation, select Save Changes.
Edit Slots
If you need to edit the custom formation layout or selected custom positions, you can do this by selecting the 3 dots to the right of the formation > select Edit Slots.
You can also edit the selected custom positions for 'System formations' by selecting the System Formations tab and clicking the Edit Slots from the right menu.
Team Selection Categories
Also in the 3 dot menu, you will see an option called Team Selection Categories. This has implications for the Learning Objective Grade Report. See a user guide for that feature here.
You can assign your players to the positions they would usually be selected for in certain formations.
You can add more than one player to a slot if you have more than GK for example. You can also select a player for more than one slot if he/she often play in more than 1 position within that formation.
When you next use the Learning Objectives Grade Report, underneath the Grade Table you will see a pitch visual of the players in their regular position(s) for certain formations. You can then rank players based on their Learning Objective grades for a set position over any period of time.
Depth Charts
Depth Charts are found in our Recruitment module and are used to help visualise and plan succession for future squads. See a guide for that here.
As mentioned above, you can choose to use certain formations within the Depth chart feature.
