Menu Functionality and Digital Ordering Platforms

When building, updating, or organizing your Toast menu, you have the choice to utilize various Toast menu features and functions. Depending on your priorities, you may choose to approach menu functionality in different ways. Being able to understand the limitations and compatibility of different menu functionalities can help you to make the best choice for your restaurant.

The charts below will outline which features are supported by each digital ordering platform.

Functionality is constantly being updated. If a feature is not compatible now, this does not mean it won’t be in the future. Continue to check back for updates!

Pre-modifiers
Used to add text either before (prefix) or after (suffix) a modifier such as ADD, ON SIDE, or NO.

Nested modifiers
Nested modifiers are created when another modifier group is added to a modifier option. These "if this, then that"-style modifier builds can help automate follow up choices based on a previous selection a guest has made. Only one layer of nested modifiers are supported.

Default modifiers
Used to assign a "standard" modifier selection or set of ingredients to a particular menu item. This can help your kitchen staff clearly identify when a menu item strays from the "norm".

Duplicate modifiers
Used to allow a modifier to be selected more than once.

Modifier ordering priority
Used to sort the order in which modifiers appear.

Images on modifiers
Used to show an example of what the modifier will look like. Does not work for nested modifiers.

Menu-based pricing (modifiers)
Used to give modifiers different prices based on which menu the modifier appears on.

Size pricing (modifier group)
Used when the cost of a modifier option changes based on the size of the menu item it is applied to. All modifier options in this group use the same size-based prices. For example, all toppings in the Toppings modifier group cost $0.50 on a small pizza, $1 on a medium pizza, and $1.50 on a large pizza.

Size pricing (individual modifier)
Used when the cost of a modifier option changes based on the size of the menu item it is applied to. Modifier options in a group can set their own size-based prices. For example, pepperoni costs $0.75 on a small pizza, $1 on a large pizza while mushrooms cost $0.50 on a small pizza and $0.95 on a large pizza.

Sequence pricing

Used when the price of modifiers in a modifier group is determined by the sequence in which they are added to a menu item. The price of the menu item is updated to reflect the guest's choices. For example, the 1st topping of a pizza is free, the 2nd topping costs $0.50, the third topping costs $0.75, and all additional toppings cost $1.00.

Size/sequence pricing

Used when the cost of a modifier depends on the size of the menu item it is applied to and the order in which it is applied to the item. For example, the 1st topping on a small pizza is $0.25, and additional toppings are $0.50 while the 1st topping on a large pizza is $0.50 and additional toppings are $0.75.

Substitute pricing*

Used to allow guests to remove one or more default modifier options from a menu item and apply the value of those options toward the purchase of one or more different modifier options. For example, a guest orders a salad that comes with chicken by default but asks to substitute salmon for the protein. The price of the chicken modifier option is $7. The price of the salmon modifier option is $9. In this case, Toast calculates the difference and charges the substitution price of $2 for the salmon (not the regular price of $9).

Portions*

Modifier options can be applied to menu items in portions, for example, a one-half portion of a topping can be applied to either the first or second half of a pizza.

*This is a part of our Pizza Menu Management module.

Time-specific pricing
Used to set the price of a menu group or menu item to automatically adjust based on the time of day or day of the week. This pricing model is especially useful for Happy Hour or weekly special menu items.

Menu-specific pricing
Used to change the price of a menu item based on the menu it was ordered from, for example, a menu item that costs $5 when it is ordered from the Lunch menu and $7 when it is ordered from the Dinner menu.

Size pricing
Used to allow multiple size categories and create a price accordingly. Size pricing can be set at the menu group or item level.

Open price
Used to ring up items or services that are not included in the menu. For example, an open item can be used to account for corkage fees, room rentals, birthday parties, and one-off events or catering.

Prompt for quantity
Used to prompt your staff to input the number (quantity) being ordered for that menu item.

Images on items
Used to show an example of what the item looks like.

Descriptions on items
Used to provide further information for servers about menu items such as ingredients, allergy info, and even cocktail recipes. If you choose to have descriptions available for online ordering and partners, this allows guests to understand all of the ingredients in the menu item and consequently can modify their selection if necessary.
