Intro talk track: “For iPhone users, we’re offering a new “Don’t wait to pay” app experience where you can connect to your check, track your tab, and pay whenever you’re ready without a receipt or QR code. If you’re interested in trying it out, let me know”.
Getting started talk track: “If you don’t have it yet, first you should download the Local by Toast app from the Apple app store and create an account. Once you open the app and update your current location, you’ll see a black “Pay” button at the bottom of your app. After clicking the “Pay” button and finding [your restaurant name] in the list, you’ll be able to link yourselves to your check by entering your table number, which is [guests’ table number].”
Tracking tab & closing out: “After connecting to the check, you’ll be able to track your tab and close it out when you’re ready using payment methods like Apple Pay. Let me know if you have any questions!”.

Monitoring payment status: Servers can track whether guests have closed out their check themselves via Toast Don’t Wait to Pay with these two tools:
POS notifications: Servers receive POS notifications when guests have successfully paid via Toast Pay or failed to pay and may need help — a quick video on how POS notifications work in this Mobile Dining Solutions POS Notifications video.
Table management POS screen: On the table management screen, the guest's table changes from yellow to white once the guest's payment has been completed.
Don’t Wait to Pay Restaurant Perks
There is no additional monthly cost for Don’t Wait to Pay, and during a promotional period [September 23, 2024 - February 28, 2025], for participating restaurants Toast will be offering:
Credit Card Rate Reduction: Toast will reimburse your restaurant for the difference between your card present and card-not-present (CNP) credit card processing rates for Don’t Wait to Pay transactions during the promotional period.
Walkout & Chargeback Reimbursement: Toast will reimburse you for the cost of Don’t Wait to Pay associated chargebacks or walkouts incurred during the promotional period. Information on reporting chargebacks and walkouts can be found here.
Tip Guarantee & Transaction Incentive: Reimbursement for any tips below 20% from Don’t Wait to Pay and $1 for each Don’t Wait to Pay transaction.

Why did Toast build Don’t Wait to Pay?
Restaurants: Toast’s goal with the Don’t Wait to Pay feature is to help:
Increase guest traffic to your restaurant: Participating Don’t Wait to Pay restaurants will be highlighted in the Local by Toast app. Toast will be marketing Don’t Wait to Pay directly to consumers in the Cambridge area.
Streamline operations: Simplify checkout to help turn tables faster. Free up servers to focus on enhancing the guest’s experience and promoting upsells.
Collect guest insights: Collect menu item reviews directly from your guests during the payment process to refine your dishes. Guest insights from each transaction can be leveraged to power your Toast email marketing and loyalty programs.
Save paper: Offer a paperless payment option that does not rely on printing receipts.
Guests: our goal with the Don’t Wait to Pay feature is to help them:
Track their tab: Allow guests to track their tab throughout the meal easily.
Save time like a VIP: Offer a novel in-app payment experience to your guests that enables them to pay as soon as they’re ready to leave without a paper receipt or QR code.
How do I turn on Don’t Wait to Pay?
If you participated in the closed beta, Toast will turn on the feature for you. If you have any questions, contact toastpaysupport@toasttab.com.
Place order: Guests place orders as they typically would with your staff.
Connect to check: The guest asks the server for their table number, which they can enter to connect to the check-in the app. Alternatively, the guest can enter the check number to connect to the check.
View tab & pay: Guest can track their tab and pay whenever they’re ready without a printed receipt.
Don’t Wait to Pay Restaurant Experience
How does the restaurant experience work?
Educate guests: At the host stand or when seating, inform guests about the Don’t Wait Pay feature and where to find it in the Local by Toast app. Note: Don’t Wait to Pay is only supported on iOS devices.
Take orders: Take guest’s orders and follow typical steps of service.
Provide table or check number: When the guest is ready to connect to the check, they will ask your staff for their table number. The check number can be provided as an alternative way to connect to the check for quick orders and split checks.
Monitor payment: You can monitor payment status either using POS notifications or the Table Management Screen on the POS.
Your staff can also collect payment traditionally by swiping the guest’s credit card on the POS.
How is this different from receipt QR codes for payment?
Don’t Wait to Pay is a paperless and QR codeless experience initiated by the guest, who asks their server for their table number or check number to connect to the check. After connecting to the check, the guest's payment experience is very similar to the receipt QR code payment experience.
How does tipping work with Toast Don’t Wait to Pay?
Guests using Don’t Wait to Pay will be presented with the tip options that you have configured in Toast Web within UI options. They can then choose to tip whatever they would like.
How do quick orders and split checks work with Toast Don’t Wait to Pay?
For quick orders and server split checks, it is recommended that guests be given the check number to help them locate the check, which is also available on the printed receipt.
Guest-led split checks are currently not supported with Don’t Wait to Pay.
If I have upgraded to Toast Pay, do I get menu item reviews and reporting with Don’t Wait to Pay?
Yes. You will collect menu item reviews as you do with Toast Pay via receipt QR codes with Don’t Wait to Pay. For more information, see Optimize Toast Pay With Menu Item Reviews.
Is Android supported with Don’t Wait to Pay?
Currently, only iOS is supported for Don’t Wait to Pay. Android users can still pay digitally using the receipt QR code if they have that enabled in their Toast Pay settings in Toast Web.
Don’t Wait to Pay Guest Experience
How does the guest experience work?
Download the Local by Toast app: The guest downloads the Local by Toast app if they don’t already have it. Note: Don’t Wait to Pay is only supported on iOS devices.
Select restaurant: The guest selects the Pay button at the bottom of the homepage and selects the restaurant where they’re dining. Note: Guests must have their location set to an address near the restaurant to access Don’t Wait to Pay.
Which guest payment methods are supported with Don’t Wait to Pay?
Apple Pay, saved cards, keyed credit cards, loyalty rewards, and Toast Cash are supported with Don’t Wait to Pay.
What if a guest leaves without paying or submits a chargeback?
During the promotional period only, Toast will reimburse you for the cost of any Don’t Wait to Pay associated chargebacks or walkouts incurred. Information on reporting chargebacks and walkouts can be found here.
Don’t Wait to Pay Troubleshooting
What if the guest does not see the “Don’t Wait to Pay” section at the top of the Local by Toast app?
If a guest does not see the option to use Don’t Wait to Pay, ensure that the location where the guest has entered an address is their “Current Location” or that they have manually entered a nearby address.
What happens if a guest connects to the wrong table or order with Don’t Wait to Pay?
When previewing the check and items included for a Don’t Wait to Pay transaction, if the guest notices they have the wrong check, they can go back by selecting This is not my check.
Can multiple guests connect to the same check with Don’t Wait to Pay?
Yes, they can connect to the same check with Don’t Wait to Pay. However, only one guest will be able to pay. More details can be found in the Don’t Wait to Pay Restaurant Perks section, including *.
