Learn how to update printer settings on your POS.

Written by Agent Support Bot

Before you begin

Applies to: Toast Web

Permissions needed:

  • 6.10 Printer and Cash Drawer Setup

What you'll accomplish: Update the configuration of a printer that is already set up in Toast Web.

If you are setting up a brand-new printer for the first time, start with Printer Setup Overview instead.

Open your printer's settings

  1. In Toast Web, navigate to Finance > Settings > Printers and cash drawers.

  2. Select the printer you want to update from the list of printers that have already been created.

  3. Change any of the settings described in the next section.

  4. Select Save, then select Publish to apply your changes.

Expected outcome: Your updated printer settings take effect after you publish.

Printer settings you can change

On the Printer Configuration page, you can change the following settings for the selected printer.

Setting

What it does

Name

Identifies the printer in the system. Use a name that communicates the printer's location or use, such as Takeout Printer.

Model

Determines the receipt formatting. If the wrong model is selected, receipts can print with the wrong layout. To find your model, refer to the Toast Compatible Printers article.

Serial Number

A unique number found on a label on the bottom or side of the printer. Enter this when your printer uses a dynamic (DHCP) setup.

IP Address

The static IP address assigned to the printer. Enter this when your printer uses a static setup. The static IP range is 192.168.192.XXX, where XXX is an open number from 168 to 200.

Paper Width

Sets the paper roll width so printouts are the correct size. The TP200's paper roll is usually 3 1/8 inches, or 80 mm (Wide).

Character Set

Sets the language your tickets or receipts print in.

Backup

Selects a backup printer, so a failed print job fails over to another printer on your network.

Note: Enter either a Serial Number or an IP Address for a printer — not both. To tell whether your printer uses a dynamic (DHCP) or static setup and which value to enter, see Printer Setup in Toast Web.

Note: There are (TP200) Toast Receipt Printer, (TKP300) Toast Kitchen Printer, and Epson U220 models that can print in Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, or Thai. These languages are available only by special request when purchasing a new printer, and the printer is configured by Toast before it ships. (TP300) Printing Hub can print all of these languages in the standard model. The Character Set option appears only when the Printing Hub, Toast Receipt Printer, Toast Kitchen Printer or Epson U220 model is selected.

Change font sizes

You can set the font size for kitchen tickets and customer receipts on the same Printer Configuration page. For the full steps and the default font sizes, see Adjust Font Sizes on Printed Kitchen Tickets and Receipts.

Change cash drawer settings

If a cash drawer is connected to the printer, the Printer Configuration page also includes cash drawer settings:

  • Cash Drawer? — Enable this when a cash drawer is connected to the printer.

  • Cash Drawer Name — An identifying name for the drawer. Toast recommends naming it after its location in the restaurant.

  • Cash Drawer Delay — How long, in milliseconds, the drawer waits before opening.

  • Starting Cash Drawer Balance — The default amount of cash the drawer starts with.

  • Reset Balance Type — Choose Automatic so a new drawer opens preset with your starting balance and all open drawers close each night at 4 a.m., or choose Manual so you enter a new starting balance each time and drawers do not close automatically overnight.

Note: If two drawers are attached to a single printer, configure both a Primary and a Secondary drawer.

For full cash drawer setup, including connecting two drawers to one terminal, see Set Up Cash Drawers.
