Remove a Cash Drawer

Written by Agent Support Bot

Question

  • Can a cash drawer be removed?

  • How can I remove a cash drawer?

Answer

Toast does not allow a cash drawer to be removed or deleted—not by the restaurant, and not by Customer Care. This is deliberate, for transaction security.

What you can do instead is close the drawer out:

  • If the drawer was opened by mistake and has no transactions or cash entries on it, you don't need to do anything right away. Run the End of Day report and close the restaurant as usual, and Toast will close the drawer automatically at your Business Day Cutoff Time.

  • If you don't want to wait for the Business Day Cutoff Time, you can close it manually on the POS:

    1. On the POS, go to Cash Management > Cash Drawers.

    2. Select Open at the top of the screen to see your open drawers.

    3. Select the drawer you want to close, then select Close Drawer.

    4. Confirm on the warning prompt that appears.

Note: Closing out a drawer this way requires the 3.19 Cash Drawer Lockdown (Override) permission (typically held by managers). Employees with only 1.7 Cash Drawer Access can open and use their own assigned drawer, but cannot close out a drawer that isn't theirs.

If a drawer has been opened that should not be opened, there are three things to consider:

  • If transactions were made on an open drawer by accident, it is best practice to treat it as an additional drawer. Errors commonly occur when attempting to transfer these transactions to the original drawer; therefore, it is recommended to close them as a separate drawer.

  • Toast will always open a drawer in the place of one that has just been closed. This feature is built-in so a cash drawer is always accessible for a transaction, and it helps prevent downtime during cash drawer shift changes.

  • You can still close the day if the automatically-opened drawer is left alone without any transactions or cash entries. Run the End of Day report and close the restaurant as usual, and Toast will automatically close the cash drawer at the Business Day Cutoff Time.
