Throughout the Rules of Golf, penalties for a Rule breach are given for both stroke and match play tournament formats. However, there are no two-stroke penalties in match play, only a loss of hole penalty or match adjustment penalty, depending on the circumstance.

As a result, how the penalties are applied for a Rule breach differs from stroke play to match play. To account for this, you can apply match adjustment penalties to specific players for a breach of the Rules of Golf. This is a match adjustment penalty, not the same as a loss of hole penalty. The match adjustment penalty is applied at the end of the hole you are playing or just completed, and the match score is revised by deducting one hole for each hole where a breach happened.

For example, if you started with 15 clubs and become aware of the breach while playing the 3rd hole and then win that hole to go three up in the match, the maximum adjustment of two holes applies, and you would now be one up in the match.

In this article, we will discuss how to apply match adjustment penalties.

Appling Match Adjustment Penalties:

Match adjustment penalties can be done on several pages:

Adjusting the Leaderboard:

When running a single round tournament or multi-round tournament, match adjustment penalties can only be applied when adjusting the leaderboard. To adjust the leaderboard and apply match adjustment penalties, follow these instructions:

  1. Go to Round > Display Leaderboard > Re-score / Print... > Adjust Leaderboard > Match Adjustment (as shown below).

  2. Click "New Adjustment" and define the Match Penalty:

    1. Player: Select the "Player" the penalty applies to.

    2. Hole: Select the "Hole" on which the penalty occurred.

    3. Penalty: Define the "Penalty" as to how many holes should be deducted.

    4. Comment: Add a "Comment" to define the reason for the penalty.

  3. Click "Save" (as shown below).

  4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 for any additional match penalties.

  5. Click "Continue."

  6. Make any additional adjustments as necessary, and then click "Done Adjusting."

The leaderboard will be re-scored, and all penalties applied. In the example shown below, Chris was carrying 15 clubs during a match, and it was not discovered until the 6th hole. In this case, because the penalty wasn't discovered till the 6th hole, the maximum deduction of two holes will be applied at the end of the 6th hole. While Chris won the hole, instead of being 2up after six, Chris is Tied with John (as shown below).
