2016 Release Announcements

Updated over a month ago

November 23, 2016

Activity Log

We often hear questions concerning how a player ended up on or off an event roster and how they got there. We’ve expanded on our activity log to allow a manager to look up for any player, how they were added or removed from the event roster, who took that action, and where that action was taken. The activity log can be found under the golfers tab at the bottom of the column on the right. The screenshot below provides a few examples of this.

Auto Create Teams From Open Registration

In our continuing effort to further simplify the creation of teams, we’ve added the ability to auto create teams based on open registration. Whenever we detect within the open registration form a situation where teams may be applicable, we’ll ask you to select a specific team name option and we’ll create these teams automatically when registration for the event has been closed. See below for a screenshot of the team settings tab on open registration.

Report Writer

All of our customers would like to see more reports from us, and the requirements vary widely. As we have always done, we try to build a generalized solution rather than a large collection of "one offs", as we have done with the scorecard composer, the tournament setup engine and the print composer. For some time, we have been working on a generalized report composer, and we are including in this release several reports created with this new tool. You will see from these examples that we have great flexibility in formatting the desired output. Over the next two releases, we will provide this tool to our customers so that you can create custom reports, and we will also be adding to a GG supplied report library. The simplest reports... select players based on some filtering (index less than 5.0), sort them (descending by index) and print one line per player with selected fields... will be very easy to build. The power of the tool will go far beyond that, as you will see in the next few months - for example, for every team, for every player on the team who played in at least one round, sort by largest number of rounds played within team, and print a report showing team, player and number of rounds played. As always, our strategy is to get something useful in the hands of our customers, solicit feedback and improve, improve, improve. See below for a short animated screenshot on our report writer. In this release, we are not providing access to the the report composer, but providing some reports that demonstrate the power of the report composer. These reports are all fully usable.

Raguzzi Charts

One of the many templates I’d like to highlight are Raguzzi charts. The purpose of a Raguzzi chart is to track pace of play for the field after each hole. Within a customer’s library of report templates they’ll see our Raguzzi chart along with a report for each hole as a checkpoint on the course. See below for examples of this report, keeping in mind that this report was created with the report composer.

Auto Create Flights/Division on Age/Gender

We’ve expanded on creating divisions and flights. Divisions or flights can now be created based on age and/or gender. A few things are important to keep in mind when using these new tools. The date of birth and gender fields must be filled out on the player roster. The date of birth field will prompt any golfer clicking in it to select their birth date from a calendar limiting data entry errors and issues with different formats of birth dates. Flights and divisions differ in one major way. A golfer can be a member in many divisions but only one flight. See below for animated screenshots of examples on creating flights and divisions.

36/54 Hole Rounds & Playoff Holes

In what we’re sure will be a popular enhancement, we’ve added features for competitions over more than 18 holes. First, we’ve introduced 36 and 54 hole tournaments. Not only does this allow customers to easily setup a 36 hole match play competition but it also allows for tournaments that are played with the same foursomes and from the same tee to reuse the GGID across multiple rounds. Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday we will be releasing the ability to use the aforementioned GGID on the mobile app. The second enhancement is playoff holes. The feature allows the customer manager to add individual playoff holes to a tournament. These holes can be added in any order and repeated as many times as needed. See below for examples of each. Both of these features are set in the tournament setup page.

Automatically generate unique website URL prefix + sharing of iframes

We’ve improved the way we create the prefix for an event/league portal. To increase the flexibility of the prefix and to reduce potential duplicates we now prepend a customer abbreviation to the beginning of the URL. For example, Philadelphia Cricket Club would now see “pcc” at the beginning of their new URL; however this abbreviation is customizable within the customer settings.

Other Important Enhancements

  • Shotgun priority to be used in create pairings by flights

  • Added turn times to pace of play on printed scorecards I(hole 9 to hole 10, hole 18 to hole 1, etc.)

  • Improved the presentation of handicap percentages on tournament setup

  • Improved usability of score entry with modifications to done button

    • Clicking done or enter closes the foursome and saves the scores

October 13, 2016

We posted a release with several enhancements, including filtering for posting scores to GHIN, populating player info from GHIN, default shotgun priority, round robin hole rotations, update handicaps in master roster, and further support in posting 9 hole scores. We've also made a number of other enhancements outlined below.

-------------------

Posting Scores to GHIN

With this release customers we have a GHIN score posting interface that looks very much like the interface used in pulling a GHIN Index. It's now possible to post scores based on a custom field from the player profile which allows a customer to easily post member and guest scores separately. It's also possible to individually select golfers for score posting. Notice there's now an ESC score preview column too.

Combining 9 Hole Scores to Post as a Tournament Score

Along the same lines of our new interface to post scores we also will allow customers to post 2 9-hole rounds combined as an 18 hole tournament round. We recognized that this created a lot of work for our customers when doing this manually. Customers will now see (for any date where at least two 9 hole rounds were scored) an additional drop down providing the option to combine this score with another 9 hole score. Notice how our ESC Score preview changes in the screen shot below.

Shotgun Priority

This tool was designed with the idea of allowing the customer to predetermine holes to double up in a shotgun start. It's important to note in the screen shot below that not all holes are filled in. Customers can leave holes blank if they'd prefer we did not use a specific hole when creating the shotgun start.

Once the priority is set it will be used by default for that course. Upon opening the edit pairings page you'll notice that we have a slightly different interface which uses the shotgun priority. If it needs to be manually adjusted for a specific event it can be done so here. Notice we now have a "reverse shotgun" button. This can be used to flip the ordering of holes so that groups are placed on 1, 18, 17, backwards until all groups have been assigned a starting hole.

Round Robin Hole Rotations

In an effort to identify areas of the product where we can help save even more time, we've identified round robin hole rotations as an area for improvement. Within the round robin setup there will be a slight change shown in the screen shot below. Customers have the ability to use the elevator bars to reorder the flight order within the shotgun start (flight 1 starts on hole 1, then hole 10, then hole 4, then hole 13...). Within flight, we reorder the matches properly.

Creating Teams From The Master Roster

We've introduced the ability to create teams directly from the master roster. In the animated screenshot below you'll see how customers can now easily search the master roster or even look up by GHIN number and add that player to a specific team. Once the team has been created, we've made it very easy to save and move on to creating the next team.

Update Handicaps From Master Roster

Another area we identified where we could save significant time is in pulling handicaps from the master roster down to events and leagues. Gone are the days of having to upload and download handicap spreadsheets with updated indexes every couple weeks to every event and league created. We think our customers in the CDGA & GAM will be especially pleased with this. Customers can now update their master roster and propagate forward to leagues and events of their choosing. We will always update starting with the first round in the future.

Teams, Flights, and Pairings by Entry Number

With this feature customers can now create teams, flights, and pairings by the entry number assigned to the golfer when they are added into the player roster. Quite simply, as you're adding players we assign each a number. If needed, a TBD can be added to fill out the foursome or the team.

Registration Logs

One feature that was not released today but will be within the next couple of days is our registration log. We've had several customers ask us for better access to the data we collect and our various logs help us share that data with you. Within the registration log you'll have available to you the date, time, and who took the action (golfer or manager). For instance if you need to know when and who canceled a member's registration for the upcoming member member this is the perfect place to look. Other uses for the registration log would be to see when a member signed up and who they've included in that registration as well as any payment that was initiated.

Other Important Enhancements

  • Redesign of the Microsoft Publisher scoreboard page for easier previewing of leaderboards

  • Improved speed of search within the Mater Roster

  • Tournament option where customers can now take the average of all balls

  • Integration with StayPrime GPS for live on course scoring

September 2, 2016

We posted a release with several enhancements, including match play bracket tee times & scoring options, additional options for waitlists, abbreviations for courses & tees, further support in setting and handicapping tees by gender, and a newly optimized way of importing golfers from the master roster. We've also made a number of smaller enhancements outlined below.

-------------------

Match Play Brackets

We've made a number of enhancements to match play brackets. A complete list with screenshots follows below.

We are now placing tee times in the column of the round it applies to. We previously printed it one round ahead of the match.

We've added many more scoring options. To name a few: alt-shot, scramble, both ball, and balls selected by par or hole. In addition to the new scoring options we've also added many more handicapping options. You'll find similar handicapping options under the "More Handicap Options" button as you see within the tournament setup page. These include index and course handicap limits by gender, rounding options for both individual and team based course handicap, and parameters to set % of total handicap by player.

New Scoring Options

Additional Handicap Options

Additional options to setting up waitlists

With this release we've now given customers two options in handlings cancellations once players are on the waitlist.

Option 1 - which will be selected by default - Should a cancellation of an individual or team occur and there is a replacement on the waitlist we will NOT move that replacement player or team into the field but rather hold that spot open for a customer manager to manually select the player or team from the waitlist and place them in the open spot.

Options 2 - Should a cancellation of an individual or team occur and there is a replacement on the waitlist that fits into that spot given the number of now open player spaces we will automatically move the player or players into the field.

Abbreviations for tees and courses

We appreciate all of the very useful feedback we've received in the area of printing scorecards. One of the most inquired about features was the way which we were denoting a tee played by a golfer on the scorecard. We've taken this feedback and not only expanded upon the scorecard but to all of our reports a new feature that introduces course and tee abbreviations while eliminating legends that contained dots, single letters, or numbers. Within your course details customers now have the opportunity to assign a 5 character course abbreviation and a 3 character tee abbreviation. Please find below an example where these new abbreviations are used.

Tee Sheet (Note: We only label players playing the non-default tee)

Multi-Round Team Match Summary

Default Tees and Course Handicap by Gender & Course Handicap Percentage by Gender

In our last release we introduced the ability to set default tees by gender which get set automatically when creating and editing pairings. We previously also allowed managers to set the course & tee on a few other pages. We have now merged this into one tool in all places that it would make sense. These include Round Robin, Autofill Flights, and Pairings by Flight.

In addition to merging the above concepts together our customers will now be able to set default course handicaps by gender within all of the above mentioned features. I've included a screenshot below of the additional gender based course handicap options.

Autofill Flights

Importing Golfers from Master Roster

We've completely reworked the process of importing players into an event or league from the master roster. Managers can now quickly search a roster, view and import from the roster in bulk and can add / edit entry numbers. We've added two new custom fields (Pro vs Amateur & Entry Numbers), the ability to insert TBDs, and a counter when selecting multiple golfers from the master roster. I've included an animated screenshot below of a complete walk through of this new tool.

Importing From Another Event/League and Adding a TBD

Other Important Enhancements

  • Open registration member classifications are no longer case sensitive

  • Index differential has been added as a tie-breaking method to flights created by team

  • Confirmed player roster and alpha list has been combined and can now be printed before creating pairings

  • Further options to stableford and quota points, hole-in-one, triple eagle, and triple bogey for example

June 29, 2016

We posted a release with a few enhancements to tournament formats and scorecards. We've aimed to simplify setup for member guest days, father/son, and the wheel format. In addition to that we continue to improve our scorecards. This month we released a team handicap line with team handicap to further support outing and scramble/alt-shot type events.

-------------------

Autofill Flights by Course Handicap

For some time now we've had the ability to autofill flights based on combined index of teammates or combined course handicap. The difficult part about the latter was that we were showing combined index of partners when you needed the course handicap. In the animated screenshot below you'll see every step in creating flights. It's important to note that we now have a big blue button that allows you to print a flight report by combined course handicap in addition to showing each individual's course handicap on that report.

Team Wheels & Foursome Wheels

In this release we've tackled the often requested tournament format, wheels. There are a few different types of wheels to highlight.

First, foursome wheels. This format while titled foursome can be played in groups of 3-6 on Golf Genius. Essentially, we allow you to score a tournament with every combination of pairs within a group of 3-6 players. For example in a foursome teams will consist of the following players, (1&2, 1&3, 1&4, 2&3, 2&4, 3&4) It's important to note that creating teams is not necessary when using this form of wheels. It's selected when setting up a tournament under the "Competition" drop down menu.

The second example of a wheels type setup would be team wheels. Examples of team wheel's events would be a member guest day or a father/son tournament. The idea here is that you have one player that plays with every other player that they're hosting. A father plays a 2 person game with all of his sons or a member playing with all of his or her guests. It pains us to see customers creating these teams manually and this enhancement will save a great deal of time with setup. Please see the animated screenshot below for the steps in setting these teams up. For those of you using Open Registration we look at the "Registration Member or Guest" field. If this field isn't used we will take the first person registered as the member and all others as guests. For those of you not using Open Registration you'll either need to make sure that the member is first in relation to the guest in the excel sheet uploaded to Golf Genius or add a column and label all of the golfers either "M" or "G".

GHIN Lookup on Last Name/State

Another enhancement that we think will be very popular is our GHIN lookup tool. It's very simple and demonstrated in the animated screenshot below. From the player roster you can now click on a player and navigate to the index summary tab. You'll see a GHIN Lookup button that takes you to a page where you can search and select based on home state, last name, and partial first name.

Team Handicap Line with Team Handicap on Scorecards

By extremely popular demand we introduce this month a "Team Scoring Line" as well as a "Team Handicap" printed on that line. This is important for the thousands of outings that are run with Golf Genius each year, especially those that play a format that requires a team handicap and team score (scramble & alt-shot). This can also be expanded to more complicated formats like 6/6/6. See below for an animated screenshot of this feature.

A Few Other Important Enhancements

  • When autofilling brackets we've added the ability to do so from a flighted tournament. Prior to this release we could only autofill using divisions.

  • We've added a rank column to the player & team standings widget

  • More specific messages on the report created after posting scores defining cause for failed posts

  • Sort the players on the confirmed player roster based on custom field prior to releasing tee sheet to the portal (tee sheet widget on member portal)

May 26, 2016

We posted a release this morning with a few enhancements to tournament formats and scoercards. We think you'll be quite pleased with how far we've come with scorecards.

-------------------

Quota Enhancements & Support for Chicago Format

One of the major improvements we've made in this release is the support for the Chicago format as well as variations to setting up a Quota game. I would say one of if not the most requested tournament format that we've had at Golf Genius Software since inception has been the ability to setup an adjusted quota game. Today we can say that we now support the adjusted quota format. You can setup any number of rounds and adjust quota each day at any percentage of the difference in quota points and quota.

The second major enhancement in this area is the ability to score the Chicago format. We've added the capability to not only change the starting quota from 36 but also to start with either a positive or negative (Chicago) quota as can be seen in the screenshot below. All of these settings can be found under the "More Handicap Options" button.

Scorecard Improvements

We've added many scorecard improvements including: cell coloring & shading, merging cells on a scoring line, changing the non watermark logo size to fit the scorecard margins, and the option to print scorecards without names prior to setting up pairings. Below I've added short animations of each feature.

Merging Cells On A Scoring Line & Cell Coloring

Resizing Logo

Printing Blank Scorecards

A Few Other Important Enhancements

  • We've had issues with members trying to log in to the member portal for clubs using SSO (Single Sign On) without already existing on the master roster. Managers can now control whether members who are not part of the master roster (based on the answer to the unique custom field) can self register themselves to the master roster. By default this will be turned on for each account and you can opt out. To opt out navigate to the Customer Center and click on the Manage Integrations tab. As seen in the screenshot you will be able to uncheck the check box and save to opt out. Furthermore you can select the manager who receives notifications when a new player signs up.

  • We've expanded on the option to restrict a player from receiving strokes on a par 3 in skins to all tournament formats. You can do so under the "More Handicap Options" button when creating/editing a tournament.

  • We've simplified the process of creating teams for multiple divisions when they are identical to the teams in the All Golfers division. Once you've created teams under the All Golfers division add the appropriate players to each of the two divisions. The tournament will then filter the teams in All Golfers by the players in the division. If changes occur, you can now make them all in one place. This is really ideal for team(pair) scored events competing on two courses.

Junior Golf Programs

Most clubs have junior golf programs or youth clinics. Parents can register one of more children for one or more events. While this was possible with Golf Genius, it was not as crisp as it could have been, particularly when a parent was registering multiple children. We now have explicit support for these sorts of programs. Simply create a league (or several) and note in the league profile that this is a junior golf event:

With this noted, open registration is changed to allow for registration of children, whether they be in the club master roster or not (some clubs include children in the GG master roster and some do not):

Note that we have added a "Date of Birth" field to handle these sorts of programs. Once the form is created, parents can register their children:

Email addresses for the children are optional. This field can be included int the registration form or not, and if it is, it should be made optional. If there is no email address for a child, we will internally create one with the child's first name appended to the parent's name (e.g., "mdzisman+steve@gmail.com). Just as we do now, if you send email to all golfers, we will send an email to the parent's email address (strip out the + child name) and insert the child's first name into the top of the message so that I know that this email applies to my son and not my daughter.

You can now easily register multiple children for different rounds in the junior golf league:

You can create multiple leagues as junior golf leagues, and parents can register the same children in multiple leagues. The only real difference here is that we "know" the parent of each child and can act accordingly.

This is a major enhancement for our private club customers. We have worked closely with a few customers in designing this (thank you, Chris Wilkinson at Llanerch) and look forward to your feedback. We will soon add the ability to restrict clinics based on gender and/or age.

More Tournament Formats

We have added two new tournament formats. We recently added 2 x 2 scramble (for couples golf) whereby we add the two scramble scores on each hole. We have expanded that to 2 x 2 x 2 for sixsomes, and added best ball in addition to all balls:

We have also added a "foursome vs. all foursomes" capability for match play, whereby each foursome is in a competition with every other foursome:

We keep track of how many matches were won by each foursome:

We also added the ability to have handicaps calculated to the hundredth's position in addition to tenths.

We made some improvements in the way we handle ties for gross/net elimination tournaments to better reflect how tournament managers handle these events where ties are allowed to persist (i.e., you do not resolve ties via Golf Genius).

Scorecard Enhancement

You can now control the height of each line in addition to the font size for text in the area:

We've also added separate checkboxes to print course handicap vs. dots on the scorecard. It was previously both or neither:

We have some further enhancements to scorecards planned for our next release at the end of this month. We appreciate how much our customers pride themselves in the quality of scorecards, and we strive to provide options that are of interest to many customers.

Transparent Backgrounds on Portal Pages

We have added the ability to let the background image on portals show through with a user controlled level of transparency, as requested by Trump Aberdeen and other customers. There is now a slider bar to set the transparency (opacity) level:

External Links in Portals

Many of our customers make extensive use of our member portals as a way to communicate with golfers and provide information that would otherwise result in phone calls to the golf shop. We have added the ability to have external links - which simply means that a player can click on a link in a portal and be redirected to a page outside the portal (which we will open in a new tab). This is very useful for redirecting users back to a page on the club's main website, for example.

An external link can be set at the page level of section level. The "Golf Genius" section in the image above is a link back to the Golf Genius website.

Many Other Enhancements....As Requested by Customers

  • We added two new types of custom fields: Date and a multi-choice field that allows for multiple answers (checkboxes vs. radio buttons).

  • New publisher templates for round robin events and bracket tournaments.

  • The ability to set tee times in advance for all rounds in a bracket tournament, so that winners in a round know the tee time for the next round.

  • We have added course handicap and round score as fields that can be selected in the print composer. Also, you can now specify "just once" to print just one copy of an item instead of cycling through all players, pairs, etc.

  • We raised the limit on the number of golfers one player can register in open registration to 12.

  • When selecting players from the master roster or other leagues/events to create manual foursomes, we reduced keystrokes and mouse clicks.

  • In selecting players for a division, there is now a checkbox to see only players not already in any division.

Where Technology Meets Tradition

We made a commitment long ago to excel in the new world of live scoring and the traditional world of great printed materials. In this release, we move forward on both fronts:

TV Leaderboards

We have completely redesigned our leaderboards on TV displays to be more consistent with what you see at USGA and Tour events. You can now add a full page background to the display and/or watermark the actual leaderboard. We have also changed the format of match play results to be more consistent with that you see on the Tour. Go to the TV display, pull down the blue control by moving the cursor to the upper middle of the screen, and you will see a new button labelled "Watermark and Background". Here are some samples of what we now generate:

The coloring depends on your choice of "dark" or not in the blue control. Note that this new format applies to any page on the TV leaderboard, like the tee sheets on the bottom row above. Indeed, we find customers using the TV display for many things besides leaderboards -- tee sheets, general tournament information, sponsor content, photos, etc. We have removed the "TV Display" button from the tournament results page, and added it to the "gear box" control on the navigation bar of the member portal (the gear box is the icon on the right side of the navigation bar on every portal.

Scoreboards

Some customers have abandoned large scoreboards for TV displays, some use both, and some stick with traditional large format scoreboards for major events like a member/guest. We have found that most of our customers had adopted MS Publisher for scoreboards long before Golf Genius. While we will continue to offer our own scoreboard composer, but we have decided to integrate really well with Publisher. We now have a wide range of templates and along with each template a spreadsheet to drive the template. Find a template you like, download it and the corresponding spreadsheet, edit the template to fit your needs, and off you go. If you have templates you'd like to contribute to our template library (perhaps built to use with another tournament management product), send them to us. Here is what you will see when you click on "Microsoft Publisher Scoreboards" in the download/print center (this is just a few of the templates in the library):

Click on the appropriate template:

Select the tournament if there is more than one, download the template and the spreadsheet, edit the template and merge. Keep the template and next time just download the spreadsheet and merge away. Coming from the enterprise software world long ago, we strongly believe in seamless integration with other software you use - Clubessential, Jonas, CSG, North Star, ForeTees, GHIN, Golfnet, GPSI, Publisher... It is part of our goal of "less work" for golf professionals.

Note: we are adding these templates to the site this morning, and they will be visible shortly.

Group Golf Trips now part of Golf Genius

It is quite common for club golf professionals to organize trips with members, or to assist members is organizing their own trips. In the spirit of what goes around comes around, I am excited to announce that our very well known golf trip planning product, "Golf Trip Genius", is now fully integrated with Golf Genius. Besides creating an event or a league, you can now create a trip. Many of you have organized small group trips before by just creating an event on our system. Add 16 players, create five rounds, create pairings in each round, set up tournaments, etc. What's the difference between trips and events? For starters, less work, and that matters a lot when you're helping members set up a trip. With a trip, all of the pairings for all rounds are done with one click. Under the trip menu, you will find a link to "Create Multi-Round Pairings". This will create pairings that minimize repeats, subject to any rules you set, and it is very easy to create rules (e.g., the Golf Professional always plays with Club president in first round):

But, wait, it gets a lot better. Usually on trips like this, there are a number of tournaments like Ryder Cups. If you create the teams and tournaments before creating the pairings, we pull in the tournament specs, determine scheduling implications, and factor those into the schedule. For example, 16 golfers go off to play 5 rounds of golf. In rounds 3 to 5, they want to play a Ryder Cup, so we need two players from each team in each foursome in rounds three to five. Create the two teams of 8, create the multi-round match play Ryder Cup, and we do the rest automatically. We will present a schedule that has the team play correct, but still has every one of the 16 golfers playing exactly once with each of the other 15 golfers. i think it's safe to say that we are the only company in the world that can do that.

It took the better part of a year back in 2009 to build the mathematical optimizing scheduler, and it has been used on thousands of trips. We're pleased that we can offer it at no additional cost to customers who have unlimited subscriptions. You can even make the members trip managers so that they can do all the work.

For those of you who are geeks deep down (aren't we all geeks, deep down:)), there is a good article in our knowledge base about why the scheduling problem is so hard. Click here to view the article. It's great bedtime reading.

The "port" of the standalone trip product to Golf Genius also includes the famous trip accountant for tracking group expenses, but does not include the old "trip book". Why bother - you can create beautiful trip portals just like any other member portal. Plus, the trip members now benefit from the great live scoring features of Golf Genius, and live results can be shared with friends at home via the portal - or on a TV in the pro shop. How cool is that?

It is easy to create a trip roster through "add players" or uploading a spreadsheet. Fool around a bit and you'll love it. Your members will love it, also, since they are not paying for it.

Many Tournament Related Improvements

Round Robin Tournaments

Almost all customers need to create round robin schedules, the most common case being flights of six teams playing five round robin matches such that every team plays every other team once. The question to be answered is: which teams play which teams in each round. Until now, we have a used standard seeding algorithm that is required for bracket tournaments (top two seeds meet in last match) but not required for round robins. Now, you can create your own seeding plan, save it, and use it over and over:

Click on "Manage Custom Seeding" and you can fill in a table of desired seeding. We make it easy and foolproof. There are also a number of other changes to round robin scheduling. We now allow you to tell us how to match the teams to the seed positions. In round 1, seed 1 plays seed 2, 3 vs. 4 and 5 vs. 6. OK, but which team is seed 1 and which is seed 2? It is usually by combined index (member/guest scenario), but possibly be the way your order the teams in the team list or even alphabetically. If the teams are such that there are multiple matches each round (6 players per team and singles matches), then you need to tell us how to set up the matches - usually by index, but there are other options.

We now support singles match play. The last section is tee sheet organization; you can have team singles play with one match per group or two. So....a fourball match in each group, two singles matches, or one singles match with just two players per group.

Gross / Net tournaments

A very common format is a gross tournament and a net tournament, but a player or team cannot win in both tournaments. We have supported this for a very long time, but we got lots of questions about setup. We think we have now made this much easier; it is a selection in purse and points:

When you select net handicapping, thee are additional purse & points options for gross and net. If you select one of these, you can then set purse and points for gross and for net. We automatically create the gross tournament in addition to the gross tournament, and do the eliminations as we do now. We think that this is much more clear.

More information on Skins results

Joe won two skins, but where? Today, you can click "Expand All" and see all the details. We've made this simpler by adding the to leaderboard the details on skins won:

Two by Two Scramble

We see lots of really cool couples tournaments. We have added a format used at Desert Mountain. Couples play in foursomes. Each couple plays a two person scramble. The two results are added for a final "team" score. If you select Foursome or 4-person team vs. field or flight, you can now select 2x2 scramble.

It's a neat format for couples, but also for any foursome based play.

System 36 Handicapping

This is a same-day handicapping system like Callaway and Peoria. It's more popular outside the U.S., but if you are considering Callaway you should google this method and give it a trial run. It is much, much easier to explain to novice golfers than the other methods.

Improved Enter Scores Preview

You're at the scoring table facing anxious golfers, with the scoreboard behind you. Most likely, someone writes the score on the scoreboard based on what the golfers write on the scorecard (team A - 6 points, team B - 3 points). Meanwhile, you enter the hole by hole scores and want to get a quick sense of the accuracy of what is now on the scoreboard. We now show tournament results in "Enter scores" for most common formats. As you enter scores we show results, simply put

With this capability, the stress level really comes down. Grab scorecards as they come in, quickly enter scores and now verify match results (or Stableford, Quota, Stroke), and then post the results to our new beautiful scoreboards. :)

Enhancements to Open Tee Times

Our open tee time capability has proven to be very popular for league play. This allows a golfer to register to play and choose a tee time from the displayed tee sheet. We have enhanced this in two important ways:

  1. A golfer can now register more than one foursome. In some leagues, a team captain registers his entire team of perhaps 16 players. When you check "open tee times" in the round profile, you can indicate the maximum number of players that a golfer can register (e.g., I can register myself and 11 other golfers).

  2. You can now add guests when using open tee times.

Custom Websites

Last year we observed many customers who created a "dummy event" just to have a portal for junior golf, for example. They would have several pages describing youth golf and one or more directories of junior golf events. Ditto for ladies golf. We've made this simpler by allowing you to create portals unrelated to any particular event. From the customer center, go to Customer Settings / Create/edit Other Portals.

And More...

  • In edit parings, you can now choose a custom field to display under each player, like affiliation, gender, index, or a custom field. This is very handy when you start to move players around.

  • When adding players from anywhere you can add players, you can now enter the custom fields at the same time as you add the player.

  • We've improved usability on editing the member portal with better hints about how to edit a text box, for example.

  • When cloning an event, we will now include the Stripe payment information if it has been entered. No need to do it again.

  • We have added TV display apps for pari-mutuel betting. You can display betting and the results. This is a nice addition to the pairings party.

  • You can now iframe an entire portal or an entire section of a portal.

  • We continue to provide deeper and deeper integration with Clubessential. If you are using CE for event or round registration, we can now access CE to acquire these rosters, including the roster for a specific round in league play.

  • When using our registration system, you can now add specific message for registration confirmation, cancellation, etc.

  • For deuces and birdies tournaments, we have added pair vs. field and foursome vs. field, in addition to player vs. field.

  • We now allow you to control if blinds should appear on printed scorecard or not.

  • You can now aggregate season points over multiple events; no need to create a league just to serve this purpose.

  • We have been expanding rapidly outside of North America, and sensitive to how scoring and handicapping is done differently outside the U.S.For some time, we have scored Stablefords differently in the U.K., and with release we add support for EGA handicap computation, which accounts for the difference between rating and par.

Member Website Integration

Tight integration with member websites has proven to be very important for many of our private club customers. As a member of Merion Golf Club, I love the fact that I can log on to the Merion website and navigate from there to all Golf Genius event and league portals. We presently integrate with Clubessential, Jonas, Members First, and North Star. Today, we issued a press release about very deep integration with Clubessential:

  • We already have SSO (single sign on) links from the navigation bar to GG directories, such as men's events and ladies events.

  • Also, we have SSO integration from CE calendar entries directly to GG portals or registration pages. Click on May 14 Couples tournament on the CE calendar, and you are redirected to our Couples event portal.

  • For customers doing event registration with the CE event registration capability, we have implemented an API to retrieve the registrations from CE without need to download a spreadsheet.

  • For customers doing event registration with GG, we can now "push" the tee sheet back to CE to update their tee sheet. We can also manage the open/closed/waitlisted button on CE calendar entries.

  • We can now send to the CE CRM system player information from outings (e.g., name and email address) for subsequent marketing activities by the customer.

Linking to Pages in Portals

From the example above, we
include the Tournament Results page from the 2015 Member Guest
in the Results section of the new portal. You can add as many of these references as you'd like from any number of other event/league portals. This is a very powerful and simple way to organize event and league portals without the need to copy content from one portal to another.

More on Season Points

Last month we introduced the ability to aggregate season points across leagues and events, something that has been requested often. With that enhancement, you no longer need to organize events into a league just to have season points aggregate across these events. In this release - surprise, surprise - we introduce a widget so that these season points can be displayed on a portal.

More on Tee Sheets

Who would think that tee sheets could come in so many flavors? Some customers want to print tee sheets in two columns in "newspaper format" - down the first column, then on to the second column. Some want the tee sheet filled in a row at a time, and some want the tee sheet display determined by tee time - 1 PM hole 1 in left column, 1 PM hole 10 in right column. We now support all of these options, as well as providing more controls for display of index and course handicap:

Refinements to Payments

With this release, I think we now have a very complete registration and payment system for golf events of all sorts. The payment capability is complementary to the registration system; for many events there is a need for registration but no need for payments.

Plus....

  • We have made some refinements to scorecards for better previewing.

  • When you clone an event or league, we now automatically clone all scorecards used.

  • We have added more match play options for 6somes. Also, we now provide match play options for 3/3/3, 6/6/6 and 9/9 rounds.

  • The pari mutuel capability that we introduced in December has generated a great deal of interest. Based on customer feedback, we made some usability improvements.

From the PR Department

We issued two press releases this week. The first was with Arcis Golf, owner of 70 golf properties. We announced that Arcis is standardizing on Golf Genius for their properties and will initially implement Golf Genius at 50 of their properties - private clubs, daily fee facilities and municipal courses. We are working with their website provider to provide integration to assure a great member and player experience. Today we are announcing the Clubessential integration described above. We're very excited about these partnerships - CE as a long standing partner and Arcis as a new partner.

The Arcis press release can be found here, and the Clubessential release can be found here.
