Handling Byes in Bracket Tournaments

In some bracket tournaments, there are not a perfect number of players/teams to fill a bracket. While it is ideal to have 16, 32, and 64 players/teams, sometimes there are last minute-drop outs or the club cannot get enough players to fill the bracket completely. In this article, we will discuss how to handle this type of situation.

When setting up a bracket tournament, it is important to select the correct field size of the bracket tournament (as shown below).

If you do not have the perfect number of players/teams, always select the bracket size larger than the actual number of players/teams that you have. For instance, if you have 33 players, you cannot select the 32 person bracket. You need to select the 64 person bracket. In the first round, there will only be one match. The rest will have a first round bye.

Here is another example: If you have 30 players, select a 32 person bracket. In the first round, the top two seeded players will have a bye. The rest will be playing a match.

When filling the bracket, empty slots will automatically be listed as byes (as shown below).

If you have players/teams with a bye in a round, they will still be listed in the pairings. The empty slots where their opponents usually are will list the bye seed instead(as shown below).

When there is a player/team with a bye, you do not need to enter scores or enter match results for that player/team. They will automatically advance and be placed in the pairings for the next round (as shown below).

However, If there is another tournament included in the round like a skins tournament, scores can still be entered for that player/team with the bye so they can compete in the non-bracket tournament.
