Singles Bracket Tournament Setup Options

Updated over 4 months ago

This feature is available for the following products

When setting up a singles bracket tournament (Event/League > Bracket Tournaments), there are various setup options. In this article, we will discuss the options in detail.

(Note: To view more information on bracket tournaments, Click Here.)

There may be cases where divisions need to be created and used when creating a bracket tournament. For instance, if not all players in the event roster are included in this bracket tournament, a division needs to be created. Or maybe you are setting up a Club Championship with a senior and regular division bracket. In this case, it will be easier to create brackets by division. For more details about creating divisions, Click Here.

You also need to select how many bracket tournaments to create. Each bracket tournament can only have one winning team. Sometimes, you may have different regions for a bracket, and in the end, the winning team in each region advance to play the winners of the other region for an overall bracket winner. In this case, you only need one bracket tournament. Other times, you may be setting up consolation brackets. In this case, you will need two brackets tournaments.

If you have multiple bracket tournaments created, you can navigate from one bracket setup to another by clicking the "Tournament" dropdown and selecting the alternate tournament (see screenshot above between Regular and Regular - Consolation brackets).

Players and Rounds Options:

The following "Players and Rounds" options are available:

  • Tournament Name: By default, we name the tournament(s) "Bracket Tournament 1, Bracket Tournament 2". We suggest changing the tournament to something more relevant to the event. In the screenshot above, we have a Regular Bracket Tournament and a Senior Bracket Tournament.

  • Number of Players: What size bracket do you need? You may or may not have the "perfect" number of players. For instance, if you only have 28 players, a 32-person bracket will need to be created. Four players will have a first-round bye.

  • Number of Regions: How many "mini brackets" need to be created within the overall bracket? If you have a large bracket (e.g., 64 players +), you may want to consider creating multiple regions, so the bracket is better organized and not one large region. For instance, the NCAA March Madness has four regions (east, west, north, south). Winners in each region advance to the final four to determine one overall winner.

  • Enter Region Names: If you are using regions, you will need to name each region. For instance, the NCAA March Madness has four regions (east, west, north, south), you will be able to name your regions.

  • Playing Rounds: Select the rounds to be used for this bracket tournament. If you have a 32-person bracket tournament, five rounds will need to be used to complete the tournament. If you need to create more rounds, go to Calendar > Add Rounds.

  • How would you like to enter scores?: Note: This feature is only available for customers using the Mobile Club App.

    • For Each Hole: When using this option, you will be able to enter hole-by-hole scores or hole results (i.e., W/T/L). When selecting this option, you will be able to make the additional selection:

      • In case of a Match Play tournament, how do you want match results to be entered?

        • Stokes: Enter the strokes on the hole, and Golf Genius will calculate the hole winner.

        • Winner per Hole: Instead of entering the stokes on the hole, enter Win/Tie/Loss. Note: This method has some limitations, as it decreases the depth of statistics and analytics and restricts you from posting scores to your handicap service provider.

    • As 9/18-Hole Totals: 9/18 hole score entry is the quickest way to enter scores because you enter only one number for each player. However, when using 9 Hole or 18 hole score entry, there are some limitations:

      • Match Play, Quota, Skins, and Other Formats will not be available or score correctly

      • Decreases the amount and depth of statistics and analytics for players.

      • Restricts you to only stroke play tournaments.

      • Restricts you from posting scores to your handicap service provider

For details on entering results from the manager site or the Club App, Click Here.

Tournament Settings Options:

The following Tournament Settings are available:

  • Balls: In virtually all cases for singles tournaments, you will be selecting "Own Ball on each hole."

  • Holes: Are the players competing in 18-hole matches or 9-hole matches?

  • Handicap: In most cases, for match play, you will need "USGA Net (Off Lowest)." However, there are other options available like "Gross."

  • Handicap Allowance: If using a Net Handicap Format, you can apply a Handicap Allowance if needed.

  • Tie-breaking: Ties in bracket tournaments are typically resolved by playoff (extra) holes or by some other method where the tie needs to be broken manually (retain ties).

    • Manually (Retain Ties): To break the ties manually, go to Rounds > Enter Match Results and select the winner.

    • Extra Holes: For details on using extra holes, Click Here. Note: Extra Hole tie-breaking is only available for 18-hole tournaments.

  • Season Points: If you are managing season points for the season, you can select the season points category and allocation table for the bracket tournament being set up. To add a season points category, click "New Award."

  • Handicaps (Button): Set advanced handicap options. For details, Click Here.

  • Set as Default Tournament for Club Score Input Terminals: Note: This feature is only available for customers using the Club Score Input Terminal. In the event you have multiple tournaments in a round, you can define which tournament will show when players enter scores. This is useful when you have different handicap settings for each tournament in the round.

Default Tee & Printing Options:

The following Additional Tournament Options are available:

  • Default Course & Tee: When the bracket and pairings are generated, they will be set off this defined course/tee. If you'd like to change course/tee for players individually, go to Rounds > Edit Pairings. Note: After creating your bracket, and you edit the course and tee for rounds that don't have pairings, the course and tee you set for those rounds will override the default course and tee when pairings are created.

  • Show seeds on bracket diagram: The bracket displayed on the portal or printed can display the seed next to each team's name.

  • Display additional information on the bracket diagram: Optionally select one or more fields to display next to the player names on the bracket diagram. Affiliation (player hometown, home club) is often used.

Additional Bracket Options:

The following Additional Tournament Options are available:

  • Create Consolation Match in the Finals: In the final round, a match will be created for the two players who lost the semi-final round. They will play for 3rd place.

  • The final round of the bracket is 36-holes: In some cases, the Finals match is a 36-hole match rather than an 18-hole match. When getting to this round, you can enter scores for all 36-holes in this round and print two scorecards for all 36-holes. Click Here for details.

  • Do not create BYEs if the previous round is still in progress: If you have two consecutive rounds "In Progress," and a player from the first round advances to the second round but does not have an opponent in the second round, that player will not show with a "Bye" in the second round.

  • Enter Scores between round dates via the Club App: Note: This feature is only available for customers using the Mobile Club App. When using the Club App, golfers are typically only allowed to check in and enter scores exclusively on the day of the round, which can be inconvenient, nor does it allow golfers part of a Bracket Tournament to enter scores earlier than the final day of the round. Checking this option will make the bracket competition available for check-in and score entry not only on the final day of that round but also before the final day of that round.

The following Display Options are available:

  • Leaderboard Default Display: Select the default view of the leaderboard for the Manager Site and Portal. You can select Bracket View (display the actual bracket) or List of Matches (display the list of matches and their status).

  • Automatically open the regions on the leaderboard: If the bracket has multiple regions, the region leaderboards will be collapsed by default. When selecting this option, the region leaderboards will instead be expanded by default.

  • TV Display: Select the TV Display view of the leaderboard. You can select Bracket View, List of Matches, or a rotation of both.
