Excluding Amateurs From Purse Payout Distributions (For Professional Events)

Updated over 2 months ago

This feature is available for the following products:

Amateur players often compete in professional events through qualification or invitation. While they are ineligible for prize money, amateurs can still earn valuable exemptions. When managing the purse for such events, you will want to ensure that payouts are distributed only to professional players, as amateurs are not permitted to receive any portion of the purse.

In this article, we will discuss how to distinguish amateurs from professionals, set up the tournament so that an amateur does not receive a purse, and how to redistribute the amateur purse.

Configuring the Pro or Amateur Customer Field

When setting up a tournament that does not pay out a purse to amateurs, you will need to use the system field for "Pro or Amateur" to differentiate between players. If you've used a different custom field to define a player role, you can map those answers to the "Pro or Amateur" field. We will discuss both options in further detail below.

Using the "Pro or Amateur" System Field for Registration (Premium and Association Customer Only)

If you are setting up registration, you can simply add the "Pro or Amateur" system field to the registration form for golfer to fill out when registering. To add this field to your registration form, follow these directions:

  1. Navigate to Event/League > Registration Center.

  2. Set up your registration form in the Registration Center, if you have not done so already.

  3. Move to the "Registration Setup" tab.

  4. Scroll down to the "Additional Information" section, where you can select which custom fields should be added to the registration form.

  5. Find the field title "Pro or Amateur." Check the box, "Include Field in Form?", to add the field to the registration form (as shown below). It would also be useful to check the box, "Is Answer Required?," to ensure the golfers complete this question during registration.

  6. Make any additional modifications to the registration center.

  7. Click "Save."

Mapping Answer to the "Pro or Amateur" Field from another Custom Field

If you've already captured a golfer's role in a different field, you will need to transfer that information to the "Pro or Amateur" system field. This is crucial for correctly identifying amateurs on the leaderboard and ensuring accurate purse distribution. We can automatically map these answers for you. To populate the "Pro or Amateur" field from another custom field, follow these directions:

  1. Navigate to Event/League > Event/League Profile.

  2. In the General Setting tab, scroll down to the section "Pros and Amateurs."

  3. Check the box "Would you like to denote Pro and Amateur on the leaderboards and printed materials?," if not already checked.

  4. Check the box for "Amateurs" (as shown below). If necessary, change how they would be denoted on the leaderboard.

  5. Click the link "Populate the Pro or Amateur" field for all golfers from an existing custom field (as shown below).

  6. Select the custom field, using the dropdown, that contains the information that should be propagated to the "Pro or Amateur" system field.

  7. For each possible answer from the selected custom field, denote if a golfer should be assigned to the "Pro" or "Amateur" role.

  8. Click "Save" in the pop-up.

  9. Click "Save" to apply the setting to the event/league profile.

Denoting Amateurs on the Leaderboard

If you have not already enabled the option to denote amateurs on the leaderboard, you must do this from the event/league profile. To denote amateurs, follow these directions:

  1. Navigate to Event/League > Event/League Profile.

  2. In the General Setting tab, scroll down to the section "Pros and Amateurs."

  3. Check to enable the box "Would you like to denote Pro and Amateur on the leaderboards and printed materials?," if not already checked.

  4. Check the box for "Amateurs" (as shown below). If necessary, change how they would be denoted on the leaderboard.

  5. Click "Save" to apply the setting to the event/league profile.

Tournament Setup

When setting up a round tournament or multi-round tournament, you will need to denote that you wish to exclude amateurs from payout distribution. You will also be able to decide if that payout should be redistributed to the professionals. To set this up in your tournament, follow these directions:

  1. Set up your tournament format as you typically would. Define the tournament purse payout.

  2. In the payout section, you will have two options to enable (as shown below):

    1. Exclude Amateurs from Payout Distribution (Mandatory): If you wish to exclude amateurs from the purse payout, you must check this option.

    2. Redistribute Payout to Professionals (Optional): If you wish to redistribute the payout that was meant for the amateur to the remaining professionals, check this option. If this option is not checked, the payout will not be redistributed. Note: When checked, the payout meant for the amateur will filter down to the next available professional. Cut professionals will not be paid out regardless. If a professional and amateur tie, the professional will receive the payout.

  3. Click "Save" to apply the settings.
