Why do my trades close immediately after opening?

Trades that open and close instantly are almost always caused by a risk management limit that has already been reached on that account.

If your trades are opening and closing instantly, a risk management limit has already been reached on that account — the risk engine is working as intended.

You might be experiencing this if:

  • Your trades open and close instantly every time you place them

  • Orders appear to fill but positions disappear within seconds

  • You've tried multiple times and every attempt closes right away

  • Replication looks normal but positions won't stay open on a specific account

  • There's a pause icon next to an account in the Risk Management panel that you don't recognise

If this is only happening to trades you place manually on a follower account — not to replicated leader trades → the Position Reconciler may be closing them. See Why does the Position Reconciler keep closing my manual trades? instead.

What is happening

When a risk threshold is hit, the risk engine closes any open position and blocks new trades from staying open. Any new trade placed after that point will open and be closed immediately by the risk engine — this can happen so quickly that it looks like the trade never opened at all.

This is not a replication bug or a broker connection issue. It is the risk manager doing exactly what it is configured to do.

How to confirm it

Open the Risk Management panel in Tradecopia and check the status of all parameters on the affected account. Use the icon beside the account as your first diagnostic signal:

No icon, toggle on

Replication is active — investigate elsewhere

If the risk management pause icon is visible, this confirms the risk engine has triggered. Check your account P&L for today — and this week if you use weekly limits — against your configured thresholds. If P&L has reached or exceeded a limit, that limit is what is closing your trades.

What to do next

Once you have confirmed a risk limit has been reached, you have two options:

Accept the session is complete for that account
Your risk parameters are working as configured. Your session on that account is done under the current limits.

Adjust your risk parameters before your next session
If your current limits no longer reflect your intent, you can update them in the Risk Management panel.

Note: If a Hard Lock is active on the account, you cannot modify any risk parameters until the lock expires. The lock cannot be removed early — wait for it to expire, then reconfigure before your next session.

Why this gets misread as a connection problem

The open-and-close sequence happens at execution speed. If you did not notice the risk limit being reached earlier in the session — or if it carried over from a prior session — the immediate closes will look like a replication failure or broker connection issue from the outside.

Common signs this is the risk engine rather than a bug:

  • Trades close the moment they fill, every time

  • The pattern repeats across multiple attempts

  • The risk management pause icon is visible in the panel

  • Your P&L for the day or week is at or beyond a configured threshold

If you have checked the Risk Management panel and confirmed no limit has been triggered but trades are still closing immediately, contact the Tradecopia support team with the details — including which account and broker are affected and what is showing in the Risk Management panel.
