The oneworld Optimiser is a two-step tool that analyses your travel habits, budget, and home airport, then recommends the most achievable and cost-effective path to your target oneworld alliance status tier, comparing programmes across all oneworld member airlines simultaneously.
How to Access oneworld Optimiser
In the left-hand navigation menu, go to Smarter Tools.
Click oneworld Optimiser.
The tool will open as a simple two-step wizard.
Use the Controls panel at the top to change the display currency (for example, US$ USD) without affecting your budget inputs.
To access oneworld Optimiser, click oneworld Optimis... (oneworld Optimiser) in the left-hand navigation menu under Smarter Tools. The tool opens on a two-step wizard. A Controls panel at the top allows you to switch the display currency (e.g. US$ USD) without changing your budget inputs.
Step 1 of 2 — Your Goals
This step asks you to define your target airline and status tier.
Select your current Airline: A dropdown shows your connected programmes. Select the programme you fly most (e.g. British Airways).
Choose your target status: Three oneworld alliance tier cards are displayed side by side:
oneworld Ruby — Priority Boarding (Group 3), Access to Business Class priority check-in, Access to preferred or pre-reserved seating, Priority on waitlists and when on standby.
oneworld Sapphire — All Ruby benefits, plus Priority Boarding (Group 2), Access to Business Class lounges, Access to Business Class priority check-in, Priority baggage handling.
oneworld Emerald — All Sapphire benefits, plus Priority Boarding (Group 1), Access to First and Business Class lounges, Access to First Class priority check-in, Fast Track or Priority Lane access at select airports worldwide, Priority baggage handling.
Click your target tier card to select it. A blue highlighted border confirms your selection.
Click Next → to proceed to Step 2.
Step 2 of 2 — Your Travel
This step collects your travel patterns so the tool can calculate realistic programme options and costs.
Home airport: Select your usual departure airport from the quick-pick buttons (JFK, LHR, LAX, DFW, SIN, HKG, SYD) or type a custom airport code. Home airport affects which routes and programmes are most achievable.
Annual flight spend: Enter how much you typically spend on flights per year. The budget currency is taken from your account settings.
Typical routes: Add at least one route to unlock exact pricing. Without a route, the tool uses average benchmark estimates. Pre-set common routes include LHR→JFK, LAX→LHR, LHR→DXB, SIN→SYD, JFK→LAX, and LHR→HKG. Click + Add custom route to enter your specific route.
Cabin preference: Enter your typical number of short-haul flights per year and long-haul flights per year. Then select your preferred cabin class for each — Short haul: Economy or Business. Long haul: Economy, Premium, Business, or First. These inputs weight the calculation towards your realistic flying pattern.
Advanced constraints (optional): Toggle this section on to add preferred airlines or airlines to avoid. Preferred airlines will restrict recommendations to routes bookable on those carriers. Airlines to avoid will be excluded from all route and programme recommendations. Leave these blank if you are flexible.
Click Find best option → to run the analysis.
Understanding the Results Page
The results page shows a headline recommendation and a ranked comparison of multiple oneworld programmes. Key elements include:
Headline: "Your fastest path to [target status]" — generated based on your inputs (e.g. "Your fastest path to oneworld Sapphire").
Best Value programme card: The top recommendation is highlighted. It shows the total cost, number of round trips required, timeline in months, and a Score out of 100.
Alternative programme cards: Other achievable oneworld programmes are shown alongside for comparison, each with their own cost, round trips, timeline, and score.
Transparency section: Explains the basis for the recommendation — pricing method used, status target details, and a confidence score (e.g. High Confidence). Click Open transparency to see the full breakdown.
Programme comparison table: A detailed side-by-side comparison of the recommended programme against your current programme, covering: Total cost, Round trips, Timeline, Score, Achievability, Qualification window type, Lounge access, Guest lounge access, Priority boarding, Priority check-in, Extra baggage allowance, Seat selection, Miles earning bonus, and Earn rate per spend.
How the recommended programme works: A plain-language explanation of the qualification window (e.g. rolling 12-month vs fixed calendar year), what counts towards the tier, and how to stay on track.
Smarter Earn alert: If a credit card multiplier has been detected that could accelerate your progress (e.g. a card that fast-tracks to a tier), an alert banner appears with a link to the Credit Card Comparison Tool.
Step-by-step action plan: A numbered roadmap specific to the recommended programme, with stages labelled Book, Setup, Fly, Accelerate, Verify, and Milestone — each with a specific Tier Point target and deadline date.
Saving a Programme Path as a Goal
Click Save [Programme name] to Goals to add the recommended path directly to your Goals page. TravelSmarter will then track your progress against this path automatically.
Changing the Display Currency
Use the Display Currency dropdown in the top-right corner of the Controls panel to switch how all costs are displayed (e.g. from GBP to USD). This does not change your budget inputs — only the display format.
