How to use the TravelSmarter Airline Calculator to estimate tier points and miles and save flights to your log before booking.

Written by Joel Waldhoff

How to use the Airline Calculator:

The Airline Calculator lets you calculate exactly how many Tier Points and miles a specific flight will earn before you book it. It applies the crediting rules of the selected airline and its partners, giving you an accurate projection of your status progress and miles earned.

To access the Airline calculator click Global Calculator (also labelled Airline Calculator in some views) in the left-hand navigation menu. The page heading reads Add Flight with the subtitle "Track your progress and benefits across all programmes."

Steps to Calculate points for a flight:

  • At the top of the page, select the airline programme tab β€” for example, American Airlines or British Airways. Click Add Program to include additional programmes.

  • Enter the departure airport in the FROM field and the destination in the TO field.

  • Enter the ticket price in the Ticket price field.

  • Enter the travel date in the date field (format: dd/mm/yyyy).

  • Enter a booking reference in the Booking ref field (optional).

  • Enter the flight number in the Flight number field (optional, but improves accuracy).

  • Select the cabin class: Economy, Premium, Business, or First.

  • Use the Fare family dropdown to select the specific fare type within that cabin (e.g. J, W, Q). This is the most important field for accuracy β€” the fare family directly affects the Avios and Tier Point multiplier.

  • Click the dark Calculate points button.

After clicking Calculate points, two results panels appear below the input form:

  1. Status progress panel shows:

  • The percentage this flight contributes toward your next tier.

  • A progress bar with updated tier points (e.g. 7,299 / 20,000).

  • Your tier reset date.

  • A full Tier Point breakdown: Ticket price, Total tax, Net fare, Cabin bonus, and Total Tier Points (e.g. 2,074).

2. Miles Progress panel shows:

  • The Avios or miles this flight earns.

  • A full breakdown: Base, Status bonus, Cabin bonus, and Total Avios (e.g. 10,192).

Saving a flight:

After calculating points, click Save Flight to add the flight to your Flight Log. Once saved, the flight appears in your Flight Log and its points contribute to your status progress tracking, Goals, and Analytics.

Next Steps

If the result looks different from what you expected:
