How to use the Flight Calculator to estimate points for a flight

Learn how to use the TravelSmarter Flight Calculator to estimate Tier Points and Avios for any flight before you book, compare flights as a paid user, and save flights to your My Flights section.

Written by Joel Waldhoff

How to Use the Flight Calculator:

The Flight Calculator lets you enter the details of any flight and instantly see how many Tier Points and Miles (e.g. Avios) you would earn before you book. It supports multiple airline loyalty programs simultaneously.

Access Level: Free users can view and track booked flights. Premium users also get the option to compare flights before booking, which shows you what partner airlines flying the same route offer in terms of points earning before you commit to a booking.

Opening the Flight Calculator:

Click Flight Calculator in the left-hand navigation menu.

Selecting Your Loyalty Program:

At the top of the calculator, select your program tab. Tabs shown include American Airlines and British Airways.

Click + Add Program to add another airline's program to the comparison.

Entering Flight Details:

  • From: Select your departure airport from the FROM dropdown.

  • To: Select your destination airport from the TO dropdown.

  • Ticket Price: Enter the total ticket price including taxes.

  • Dates: Enter your outbound and return dates.

  • Booking Reference (optional): Enter your booking reference for record-keeping.

  • Flight Number: Enter the flight number (e.g. BA444).

  • Cabin Class: Select one of the cabin class buttons Economy, Premium, Business, or First.

  • Fare Family: Click the Fare family dropdown to select the specific fare type (e.g. J, W). This affects the points multiplier applied.

Calculating Points:

Once all fields are filled in, click the Calculate points button. The results appear below the form in two panels.

Understanding the Results

Status Progress panel (left):

  • Shows your projected progress towards the next status tier (e.g. Progress to Gold at 36%).

  • Displays your current Tier Points balance and the target (e.g. 7,299 / 20,000).

  • Shows the status Reset Date.

  • Tier Point Calculation breakdown: Ticket price, Total tax, Net fare, Cabin bonus, and Total Tier Points.

Miles Progress panel (right):

  • Shows the total Earn Points from this flight (e.g. +10,192).

  • An Avios Calculation breakdown showing: Base Avios, Status bonus, Cabin bonus, and Total Avios.

A Decision Tool for Premium Users

For Premium users, the Calculator is both a points calculator and a decision tool. You can use it either before or after booking your flight, by selecting Already booked or Not booked when entering your flight details.

Already Booked

Enter the flight details and select Already booked. The Calculator will:

  • Calculate the points and status earnings for the flight.

  • Show how the result was calculated.

  • Check whether you selected the best earning option available.

  • If it was the best option, the Smart Advisor confirms this.

  • If a better option existed, the Smart Advisor explains what you could choose next time.

  • Allow the flight to be saved directly to My Flights → Booked.

If you try to leave without saving, you will be reminded that the flight has not been saved.

Not Booked

This is the core Premium benefit - it allows you to check a flight before committing to it. When you select Not booked, the Calculator will:

  • Calculate the proposed flight.

  • Compare it with relevant partner airlines operating the same route.

  • Use the same entered price and flight details across the comparison.

  • Identify a better option only when it earns more status points.

  • Confirm when your original choice is already the best option.

  • Show the recommended option through the Smart Advisor.

If a better option is found, you can select Add and compare to review the options side by side and choose which one to save.

Disclaimer: The Calculator does not use live fare or availability data. Points and status earnings are calculated based on the flight details and price you enter, used as a benchmark.

Because the flight has not been booked, it is saved as a Draft in My Flights. From there, you can request a quote for the selected option.

Saving the Flight:

After reviewing the calculation, click Save Flight to add this flight to your My Flights section. Premium users can save flights as Draft (for flights being considered) or Booked (for confirmed bookings). This allows you to compare potential flights before committing and track your actual bookings separately.

Next Steps:

To view all saved flights and their earned points:

Go to My Flights to view your booked flights and draft flights (if you have a Premium plan). See our guide on My Flights for more details on managing your flight log.
