TravelSmarter gives you the most accurate Tier Points and miles estimate we can, but because we don't sync live with airline systems, there are times when what you see in the calculator or Flight Log won't match exactly what British Airways, American Airlines, or your chosen programme actually credits. This article walks through the common reasons and what to do about them.
Small differences (a few points): These are normal. Airlines round differently, tax breakdowns vary by booking channel, and minor promotional bonuses aren't always factored in. You don't need to do anything unless it affects your goal tracking.
Big differences (hundreds or thousands of points): Usually means one of the inputs is wrong, or an airline has changed its earning rules. The checklist below will help you identify which.
Common causes of a discrepancy:
Fare Family (Booking Class) Mismatch
This is the single most common cause. Within the same cabin (e.g. Economy), different booking classes earn at very different rates.
A British Airways Economy Y-class fare earns more Tier Points than an O-class or Q-class fare.
A Business J-class fare earns significantly more Avios than a Business N-class fare.
What to do: Check your booking confirmation email for the exact booking class letter and make sure it matches what you selected in the Global Calculator or Flight Log entry.
Net Fare vs. Gross Fare (Tax Split)
British Airways Tier Points are calculated on the net fare, the ticket price minus taxes, surcharges, and fees. TravelSmarter uses standard tax assumptions, but the actual tax breakdown on your specific ticket can vary by:
Departure country and airport
Booking channel (ba.com vs. OTA vs. corporate booking tool)
Additional local levies (e.g. APD, passenger service charges)
What to do: If your BA booking confirmation shows a different net fare than what TravelSmarter assumed, the Tier Point figure will differ proportionally. Update the flight manually in your Flight Log to match what BA credits.
Recent airline rule changes:
Airlines update their earning structures periodically, sometimes without advance notice. Examples include:
Changes to the bonus Tier Points awarded per economy flight
Adjusted cabin multipliers (e.g. reducing Business class earning)
Revised partner earning tables
New or discontinued promotional structures
When a rule change happens, there may be a short period before our logic team updates the calculator. During that time, TravelSmarter’s estimate may be slightly higher or lower than the points credited by the airline.
What to do: If you believe a recent rule change may be the reason, please contact our support team and include the details listed in the Report a Suspected Algorithm Issue.
Status bonus not reflected:
Elite members earn bonus points on top of base rates. If your TravelSmarter profile doesn't have your current elite tier set correctly, or if your tier changed recently, the bonus may not be factored in.
What to do: Check your Status page and make sure your current tier is set correctly.
Partner flight crediting to a different programme:
When you fly a partner airline and credit to a different programme (e.g. an Iberia flight credited to British Airways Executive Club), the earning rate is set by the crediting airline's partner table not the operating airline's standard rate. These partner rates are usually lower than the operating airline's own rate.
What to do: Make sure you've selected the correct crediting programme in the Global Calculator, not just the operating airline.
Promotional bonuses:
Airlines run limited-time earning promotions (e.g. "double Avios on transatlantic flights this month"). TravelSmarter calculates standard base rates and does not factor in short-term promotions unless they become a permanent part of the programme.
What to do: If the airline's credit is higher than our estimate because of a promotion, that's expected. Just update the Flight Log entry to match the actual credit.
How to correct the flight:
Once your airline has credited the flight, you can manually correct the Tier Points and miles figures so your totals stay accurate:
Go to Flight Log in the left-hand navigation.
Find the flight and click the pencil (edit) icon.
Update the Points and Tier Points fields to match what your airline actually credited.
Click Save. All linked pages (Dashboard, Status, Goals, Analytics) update immediately.
