Understanding Driver Pay Rate Types

Truckbase supports multiple pay rate types for driver settlements, allowing you to pay drivers based on the method that works best for your operation.

Available Pay Rate Types

Percentage

Best for: Revenue-sharing arrangements where driver pay is based on a percentage of the load revenue.

  • Calculation: (Rate % / 100) Γ— Order Rate Γ— Trip Revenue Percentage

  • Example: 30% of a $2,000 load = $600 base pay

  • For team drivers, this is automatically split (e.g., 50/50 for two drivers)

Per Mile

Best for: Long-haul operations where distance driven determines pay.

  • Calculation: Rate Γ— (Loaded Miles + Empty Miles)

  • Example: $0.55/mile Γ— 500 miles = $275 base pay

  • Both loaded and empty miles are included in the calculation

Per Hour

Best for: Local delivery, hourly work, or time-based pay arrangements.

  • Calculation: Rate Γ— Hours Worked

  • Example: $25/hour Γ— 8 hours = $200 base pay

  • Enter the hours worked manually when calculating pay

Flat Rate

Best for: Fixed pay per trip regardless of miles or time.

  • Calculation: Fixed amount per trip

  • Example: $350 flat rate per trip

Per Load

Best for: Paying a set amount for each load hauled.

  • Calculation: Rate Γ— Number of Loads

  • Useful when consolidating multiple small loads

Per Stop

Best for: Multi-stop delivery routes where pay is based on stop count.

  • Calculation: Rate Γ— Number of Stops

  • Example: $25/stop Γ— 6 stops = $150

Per Diem

Best for: Daily allowances or overnight trip compensation.

  • Calculation: Rate Γ— Number of Days

  • Often used for meal allowances or overnight pay

Setting a Driver's Default Pay Rate

You can set a default pay rate type and rate for each driver in their profile. This rate will then automatically apply when calculating base pay for their trips.

  1. Go to Teams β†’ Drivers

  2. Click the three-dot menu on the driver row β†’ Edit

  3. Under the driver settings, find the Default Pay Rate Type and Default Pay Rate fields

  4. Save changes

Default trip pay

You can set defaults that will automatically apply on every trip assigned to a driver.

  1. Go to the Pay tab on the driver's profile page.

  2. Set defaults that occur on every trip for other pay, deductions or reimbursements.

Period pay defaults

You can set defaults that automatically apply to this driver's settlements for each pay period.

Changing Pay Rate on Individual Trips

You can override the default pay rate for any specific trip:

  1. Open the settlement and click into a trip

  2. In the Base Pay section, adjust the rate type or rate

  3. The settlement totals will update automatically

Team Driver Pay

When a trip has two drivers assigned (team drivers), the system automatically calculates each driver's share:

  • Each driver receives 50% of the percentage-based pay

  • This is handled automatically - you don't need to manually split the pay
