How it works
An automation belongs to a campaign. It watches a lead source, hands every new lead to the campaign (which runs the research and writes the sequence), and pushes the finished output to wherever your reps work.
With Outreach as the source, the automation watches one or more tags in your Outreach workspace. Apply a tag to a prospect in Outreach and Twain picks them up within about a minute, runs them through the campaign, and exports the result.
Step 1: Pick the tags that trigger the automation
There are two ways to set it up:
While adding leads: When you create, duplicate or add leads to a campaign, pick Outreach as the source, choose the tag and turn on Auto-add new leads. The campaign keeps pulling from that tag after the first import.
From the campaign: In the Automation row under Agent, click Setup and choose Outreach in the Import step.
Either way, search for the tag and click it. You can pick more than one. Twain treats them as OR, so any new prospect carrying any of the selected tags flows through.
Pick the tag (or tags) that should trigger the automation. Counts show how many prospects currently carry each.
The counts next to each tag show how many prospects currently carry it in Outreach. They're a sanity check before you activate the automation.
Note: Remove a tag from a prospect in Outreach and they stop entering the automation. Prospects already mid-flight aren't affected.
Step 2: Choose the research depth
Every lead the automation pulls in is generated by its campaign: same agent, same persona, same sequence structure. What you choose here is how deep each generation goes:
Base: 1 credit per lead
High: 2 credits per lead
Ultra: 8 credits per lead plus 2 per sequence step, with the deepest research
You can change the depth later in the automation's settings. Leads already in progress finish at the depth they started with.
Step 3: Export to your tools
The last step is where the finished output goes. Pick from: Apollo, HeyReach, HubSpot, Instantly, La Growth Machine, Lemlist, Outreach, Salesforce, Smartlead and more. Map sequence steps and subject lines to the right fields on the destination.
A common pattern is to export back into Outreach — the prospect gets tagged in Outreach, Twain runs research and writes a sequence, and a few minutes later that same prospect shows up in Outreach with a Twain-generated sequence attached, ready to launch. From the rep's perspective, they tagged a prospect and it showed up ready.
Pick the export target and map sequence steps and subject lines to fields on the destination.
Once it's active
New prospect gets tagged in Outreach → Twain notices on the next poll → adds them to the campaign → runs research → writes the sequence → exports to your destination → notifies you when it's done.
The only thing the rep does is apply the tag. The campaign's log shows what ran and when. Every lead the automation added is marked. In the sidebar, automated campaigns carry an icon that turns while a run is in progress.
