How Twain Automations Work

What an automation is, where to find it on your campaign, how the three steps fit together, which lead sources are available, and where to find the integration-specific guides.

Formerly called Workflows. Automations used to have their own section in Twain. They now live directly on the campaign they feed. Old workflow links still open the right automation.

What is an automation?

An automation keeps a campaign supplied with new leads, without manual steps in between. You set it up once: where leads come from, how deep Twain should research them, where the output goes, and whether you want a notification. After that, new leads flow in, get researched, get a sequence, and are exported on their own.

Each automation belongs to one campaign. Twain uses that campaign's agent and brief to research and write for every lead.

Where do I find it?

  • On the campaign: In the Automation row under Agent. It shows Setup if the campaign has no automation yet, or its status (Active, Paused or Error) with a gear icon. Click the gear to open the automation's diagram and settings right inside the campaign.

  • In the sidebar: Automated campaigns are marked with an icon, which turns while a run is processing. Use the filter at the top of the list to switch between All campaigns and Automated campaigns.

How do I set one up?

There are two ways:

  1. From an existing campaign: In the Automation row, click Setup. The Automation Builder opens with this campaign already selected.

  2. While adding leads: When you create a campaign, add leads or duplicate a campaign, pick your source (for example a HubSpot segment or an Apollo list) and turn on Auto-add new leads. Choose the research depth and finish the flow. After the first import, the automation keeps running and adds new leads as they appear in the source.

The three steps

  1. Import: where your leads come from (see lead sources below) and how deep Twain researches them: Generate in Base, High or Ultra. Credits are charged per lead according to the mode: 1 on Base, 2 on High, 8 plus 2 per sequence step on Ultra. See How Modes Work: Base, High, and Ultra.

  2. Export: where the finished research and sequences go, for example your CRM or sequencer. You can skip leads with warnings so flagged leads never reach your sending tool. Leave this step empty if the leads should only appear in Twain.

  3. Notifications: optional. Turn on Send email or Notify on Slack to get updates on processed leads.

Integration guides

Each lead source has a dedicated guide with the step-by-step setup:

For custom API setups, open the menu at the bottom of the sidebar, click API key and open the API documentation. In the API, automations are still called workflows.
