Am I eligible to vote from abroad?

If you are an American citizen 18 years or older who has resided in the U.S., you are likely eligible to vote from abroad.

How do I vote?

The first step is to register to vote via a special process for voters living abroad.

This takes 5-7 minutes and you can complete the process at:

Once you have registered, your ballot should be sent to you around September 20, in advance of the November 2024 General Election.

When filling out the form, you should use the last address where you were living in the U.S. before moving abroad.

Am I eligible to vote from abroad if I've never resided in the U.S.?

Even you have never resided in the United States, you are likely eligible to vote! It depends on which state your parents last lived in before moving abroad. You can look up the list of eligible states at https://www.fvap.gov/citizen-voter/reside.

When filling out the registration form, you will use your parents' last U.S. address before moving abroad.

Are my children eligible to vote if they’ve never resided in the U.S.? They were born outside of the US and they get US citizenship through my own US citizenship.

Your children are likely eligible to vote! It depends on which state their parent(s) last lived in before moving abroad. You can look up the list of eligible states at https://www.fvap.gov/citizen-voter/reside.

If your state allows it, you will then have your children get registered to vote by filling out the this registration form.

Am I eligible to vote if I am a US citizen but I am unsure about my intent to return?

You are likely able to vote in federal elections (President, Vice President, and Congress) due to the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA). But your ability to vote in other elections depends on the state you are registered to vote.

We recommend filling out a registration form and submitting it to your local election official in the US. They will tell you what you are allowed to vote for.
