FAQ: PWS Basics

PWSweather

Your station ID is a unique identifier for your station - it cannot be changed. If you’d prefer a different ID, you must create a new station with the ID you prefer.

Initiating - Your station has recently come online and is sending data. The confidence level of the station will increase while it continues to send accurate observations. The initiating stage may take up to 5 days, during which your station may not be displayed on the PWSWeather.com maps.

Inactive - Your station likely stopped sending data or never started sending data. Please check your software to ensure you've opted to send your data to PWSWeather.

Rejected - Data received from the station does not pass quality control. If you are confident that the station is sending accurate data, please contact support.

Bad Data – Your station has recently sent data that our automated quality control system has flagged as bad. As your station continues to send accurate data its confidence will be increased. Once at an appropriate level, your station will become “Active” again.

Questioned - Your station has sent a small number of observations that do not pass quality control. Ensuring the station is sending the correct information will cause the confidence level to rise and the status to change.

Active - Your station has consistently sent reliable weather data.

We utilize a Content Delivery Network for performance purposes across all pages. This ensures fast load times, resulting in a better experience for our users. New observation data is retrieved every 5 minutes regardless of station update intervals. Typically, official National Weather Service (NWS) stations update every half-hour or every hour. Most software can upload more frequently, and our servers will allow updates as often as your software will allow (up to once a minute). A half-hour upload schedule is suitable as well.

We recommend users set up a new station ID when they relocate their hardware to a new address. This prevents old data from the former location from impacting any averages or historical data logged in the new location. You can still view and monitor your archived data for the old location on PWSweather.com at any time. Please note, when changing your station's location, it will require your station to go through our automated quality control process.

All PWSweather contributors currently uploading station data also receive access to the AerisWeather API, which can be used to download all your data. You can sign up for the Contributor Plan here by entering your PWSWeather username and password.

To delete your station, navigate to the station’s profile you wish to delete. Click the trash icon in the top right corner and click “delete station” in the pop-up menu. Please note – station deletion cannot be reversed.
