All users with edit permissions can easily configure colours for widgets and labels. With this functionality, you can assign a colour theme to all widgets, customise colours for individual widgets, and select specific colours for labels within widgets. Choose from predefined themes or create your own custom theme using any two colours. Get ready to make your dashboards visually stunning and tailored to your preferences.

Please be mindful that in existing dashboards, a colour theme won't be applied until you choose one. Until then, they will maintain their preset configurations. You have the option to select a colour theme to be applied to all compatible widgets across the dashboard.

How it works

For pre-existing dashboards, no theme will be set by default. You can pick a colour by accessing Settings > Colour Theme.

When creating a new one, the default theme will be random but you can also pick your desired one.

When a dashboard theme is set, all supported bar chart widgets in the dashboard will update instantly to reflect the selected theme.

When adding a new bar chart to a dashboard, the dashboard theme used immediately will be automatically applied to the widget in the builder:

Line charts and pie charts use a random colour theme so these will not instantly update when the dashboard theme is changed. This is so you can easily interpret which data belongs to which label. If desired, you can override the ‘Random Colours’ for pie charts and line charts and enable them to use the dashboard theme or your colour convention by editing the colour of each label:

If a widget is using the dashboard theme or an overriding theme, when new labels are added to the widget, e.g. a relationship gains data or the widget filters are updated, the labels will continue to follow the selected theme.

example 1: The widget has only a single dataset/label

example 2: The widget gains new data/labels. Observe how the Yellow theme is continued.

Customising colours

If none of the available themes suit your preferences, or if you wish to craft a unique theme, we have the solution for you! Within the color theme selection menu, you'll find an additional 'Custom' option. By choosing this, you can design your theme using two colors of your preference. Apply your custom theme either across the entire dashboard or to a specific widget.

When "Custom" is selected, a button will appear so you can choose your colours:

Click ‘Select Custom Colours’ and you can either input the HEX code for both colours or select First Colour and Second Colour from the palette.

Widgets with breakdowns applied and other restrictions

Most widgets showing a breakdown with charts will typically have random colors. This happens because these widgets often display dense data. However, there are three exceptions to this rule. The Project widgets broken down by Project Status, Project widgets broken down by Project Health, and Sustainability by Custom Data Source widgets broken down by Report Status will not have random colors. These widgets use preset colors based on specific statuses within the platform.

When a widget has a breakdown applied and is displaying random data, it can still be edited by the user the same way. A similar modal appears but with several informative messages. The first message explains that data with a breakdown applied can have the colour changed, but you will only be able to see the effects of this once the breakdown is removed.

example 1: The widget contains a breakdown so the pre-set Grey theme is not visible.

example 2: Breakdown is removed and the Grey theme is visible.

NOTE: In some widgets, such as Performance, the coloured data is set elsewhere in the platform, therefore changing the colour of these widgets is not supported. For example, Performance widgets use the threshold colours from the achieved score/value thresholds (red, amber, green) . If you attempt to change the colours in these widgets, you will be shown an informative message explaining why the colours cannot be changed.

The following list of widgets do not display the ‘Edit Colour’ button when hovering over the edit widget icon. This is because they do not have coloured information to change:

Initiative funnel widget

Value Tracker widgets

Other: Custom and Document Viewer
