The template editor has a built-in AI assistant: select part of your template, say what you want changed, and it rewrites the template syntax for you — expanding vague placeholders, adding default values, tightening wordy instructions, or converting free text into proper markup.
How to use it
Open an existing template in the Template Builder. AI rewrite only works when editing a saved template — save a new one first, then come back.
Select the part you want to improve — anywhere from a single placeholder to several sections, between 3 words and about 8,000 characters (~2 pages).
In the toolbar that pops up above the selection, click Rewrite ▾, then Custom.
Type your instruction — or click Dictate to speak it and edit the transcript — then click Rewrite.
The suggestion appears in a preview below your original text. Click Cancel to stop early, or wait and choose Accept (replaces your text), Discard (keeps the original), or Regenerate (same instruction, different result).
Accept only stages the change — nothing is saved until you click Save on the template. If you accept and change your mind, Ctrl/Cmd+Z restores the original in one step; discarding or cancelling leaves no trace in your undo history.
What you can ask for
Anything, in your own words — the AI understands [placeholders], (instructions), and headings, and keeps the correct format. Common requests:
"Add default values" — adds fallback text like "If normal, write NAD" or "If not mentioned, leave field empty".
"Expand this" — turns a vague placeholder like
[history]into a detailed extraction instruction with formatting guidance and fallbacks."Make more concise" — tightens wordy instructions without losing specificity.
"Convert to template syntax" — turns pasted free text or example notes into proper markup.
"Remove redundant instructions" — cleans up repeated phrasing across placeholders.
"Add conditional instructions" — adds
(only include if mentioned)to sections that should be optional.
Suggestion chips below the text box offer one-click versions of the most common requests — click several to combine them. A toggle at the top of the dialog switches between rewriting just your Selection (the default) and the Whole template, which suits sweeping changes like "add default values to every placeholder".
If something goes wrong
The Rewrite button doesn't appear. Your selection is too short (under 3 words) or too long (over ~8,000 characters). Adjust it and the button comes back.
"Rewrite failed" message. Usually a network blip or expired session. Try again; if it persists, refresh the page.
The rewrite stops partway. Click Discard to restore the original, then try again.
The result isn't what you wanted. Click Regenerate for a different version, or Discard and reword your instruction.
