Two dogs from the same household, a litter check, a cat and a dog booked back to back — some consults have more than one patient in the room. Record it as a single consult and Whippet writes a separate clinical note for each animal it examined, so nothing from one patient ends up in the other's record.
How to record a multi-patient consult
Start a consult as usual — record live, or upload an audio file.
In the Patient field, enter every animal's name, for example Bella and Max.
Say each animal's name as you move on to it — "Right, now let's look at Max". The AI uses names to tell the animals apart, so a clear handover is worth the two seconds.
Summarise the plan for each animal before you stop, naming the animal in the same breath as its treatment.
That's it. Whippet works out from the recording which animals were actually examined and drafts a note for each one.
What you'll see
When the consult finishes, the notes area has one tab per patient for every template you selected. Each tab is labelled patient · template, for example Bella · Default Template and Max · Default Template, so two animals never read as two templates.
Each note is written from that patient's findings alone — Max's note won't mention Bella's ear drops, and Bella's won't carry Max's vaccination. Everything else about the consult works exactly as it does for one patient:
Key information (from the More menu) lists each animal under its own heading, Animal 1: Bella, Animal 2: Max.
The Client Summary letter and Billable Items cover the whole visit in one place.
Download .docx and Download .pdf name each file after that note's patient, so you get one file per animal.
The Consult Details panel shows the names you entered as the Patient.
A multi-patient recording counts as one consult towards your plan, the same as any other recording.
If something goes wrong
Only one note came back for a two-animal visit. Whippet only splits a consult when it's confident a second animal was examined, not just talked about. A housemate the owner mentions in passing, or a pet from the history, is deliberately kept out of its own note. If both animals really were seen, check that each was named on the recording and its findings and plan were said aloud, then record the next one the same way. For this consult, the merged note has everything — edit it into two by hand, or use New from template for a second copy.
The second animal's note is thin. The AI can only write down what it hears. Treatments done in silence — drawing up a vaccine, dispensing tablets — need saying out loud, with the animal's name.
A note is under the wrong name. Use the transcript (View transcript in the More menu) to check what was said, and edit the note. Let us know via support so we can look into it.
What this doesn't do (yet)
Split later additions. Add details, New from template, and regenerating a note produce one combined note for the whole recording, not one per animal.
Write a letter or bill per patient. There's one client summary letter and one billable-items list for the consult.
Split meeting recordings. Meetings are never divided by animal.
Create separate consults. Both patients live in one consult; if you need one record per animal in your practice management system, record each animal separately.
