Emoji and Credit Usage
Normally, messages use GSM-7 encoding, which allows up to 160 characters per credit. However, when you use an emoji or other special characters (such as non-English letters or symbols), the message is reclassified to UCS-2 encoding, which allows only 69 characters per credit.
This means that even short messages with emojis may cost more than one credit.
By default, emojis are turned off in Whippy to help manage credit usage. You can enable or disable them anytime in your workspace settings.
Example:
A 100-character message with no emojis = 1 credit
A 100-character message with 1 emoji = 2 credits
You can experiment with how emojis impact credits using the Twilio Messaging Segment Calculator.
