Understanding Static Contact Lists in Whippy

Use static lists to manage fixed groups of contacts for imports, one-time audiences, and manual membership.

Written by Maria Cairns

Why it matters

Static lists are useful when an audience should stay fixed unless a user explicitly changes it. They are the right choice for imported lists, event lists, and one-time operational groups.

Key Concepts

Static list: A fixed group of contacts managed by import, manual changes, or bulk actions.

Segment: A dynamic group of contacts based on saved filters.

Import list: A static list created when contacts are imported from a file or clipboard.

List membership: The relationship between a contact and a static list.

Step-by-Step: Manage static lists

  1. Open Contacts from the main sidebar.

  2. Open Lists, then select Static lists.

  3. Use Search to find an existing static list.

  4. Open a list to review its contacts.

  5. Use Add static list or Import CSV when creating a new fixed audience.

  6. Use row actions to view, rename, or delete a static list when needed.

  7. Use bulk actions from All contacts to add or remove selected contacts from lists.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Use static lists when the audience should not change automatically.

  • Use segments when membership should update from filters.

  • Name imported lists with source and date so users know where the audience came from.

  • Clean up old one-time lists when they are no longer useful.

Troubleshooting

Issue

Possible Cause

Fix

A new contact is not added to a static list automatically

Static lists do not update from filter rules

Add the contact manually, use a bulk action, import into the list, or create a segment instead

A static list has outdated contacts

The list has not been maintained since import

Review membership and remove or add contacts as needed

A user cannot delete a list

The user may not have the required Contacts permissions or the list may be in use

Review role permissions and confirm the list is safe to remove
