When you select Add an activity or resource in one of your course topics, there are two different resources you can use to add H5P activities: H5P (core integration version) and H5P Interactive Content (plugin). Each resource includes different settings you can enable when creating the activity. You have a little more control when using the H5P core integration version instead of the H5P Interactive Content plugin.

H5P - This is the core integration version.

The H5P activity enables H5P files to be uploaded and added to a course.

NOTE: The H5P activity needs to have been previously created in the course's Content bank or the WIU WordPress site.

H5P - Interactive Content - this is an H5P plugin.

The H5P plugin enables you to create interactive content such as Interactive Videos, Question Sets, Drag and Drop Questions, and much more; you add the interactive H5P content to your course by clicking Add an activity or resource.

Moodle Gradebook

Adding H5P activities using Add an activity or resource on your course home page automatically places the activity in your Moodle gradebook, even if the activity isn't one that is graded. Examples of H5P activities that do not provide actual grades include Accordion, Audio Recorder, Dialog Cards, Image Slider, and Timeline. Additionally, H5P activities can be completed multiple times based on your settings (e.g., Enable "Retry").

H5P (core integration version): When using the H5P (core integration version), you have Grade and Attempt options.

  • With Grade options, you can choose to set the Grade type to None, which means the H5P activity WILL NOT appear in the Moodle gradebook.

  • Attempt options allow you to record the Highest grade instead of the Last attempt.

Interactive Content (plugin): When using the H5P Interactive Content (plugin), the most recent attempt and grade is the grade that is recorded in the gradebook. For that reason, activities created with the H5P plugin are not recommended for major assignments or exams. Instead, these activities can be used to engage students in your materials and provide creative ways for students to gain practice in understanding your concepts.

NOTE: Most importantly, the grades from any H5P activities DO NOT transfer to the Genius Teacher Grade Report or District Data Report since these activities have no Due date associated with them; however, the H5P grade WILL get calculated in the cumulative, running grade on the student's Dashboard in Genius. Remember, Online Education Advisors rely on the District Data Report when pulling quarter grades for report cards. Additionally, H5P activities DO NOT transfer to the Genius gradebook. The grades in Moodle and Genius will never match up if you are placing graded H5P activities on your course home page using either the H5P Core Integration version or the H5P Interactive Content plugin.

Alternative Solution

Instead of adding H5P activities directly to your course home page, you can add H5P activities inside Moodle books, pages, labels, assignments, quizzes, or forums. When adding H5P activities inside resources and activities, the H5P activity WILL NOT appear in the Moodle gradebook. Therefore, the Genius gradebook will not be impacted.

Other Ways to Add H5P Activities to Your Course

  • Create an H5P activity in your course Content bank and then add it to one of your course topics (sections) or within any resource or activity that has a text editor.

  • Download an .h5p file and add it to your course Content bank. Then, add the H5P activity to one of your course topics (sections) or within any resource or activity that has a text editor.

  • Copy the H5P activity's embed code and paste it into the HTML source of any resource or activity that has a text editor.
