Choose One Roster Source to Set Your Writable Class Up for Success

When setting up your Writable account, one of the most important steps is choosing your roster source—either HMH Ed, Google Classroom, Schoology, OR Canvas. Using multiple roster sources will create challenges such as duplicate assignments, disorganized grading, and confusion for both teachers and students.

This article will cover:

Why You Should Pick Just One

Selecting a single roster source helps keep things clear and consistent for both you and your students. With one source:

  • Assignments stay streamlined.

  • Grades remain consistent across platforms.

  • Students always know where to find their work.

Maintaining one organized setup creates a consistent, seamless experience all year long for both you and your students.

❗️Reminder: If you need access to Ed curriculum, you will need to launch Writable from Ed at least once.

How to Choose What’s Best for Your Class

Before you begin, ask yourself these two key questions:

  1. Where do my students usually go to access assignments?

  2. Do I want Writable grades to sync back to that platform’s gradebook?

Your answers will guide your choice:

  • Choose Google Classroom/Schoology/Canvas if students access their assignments from here or if you want Writable grades to automatically sync to the respective learning management system.

  • Choose HMH Ed if your students complete assignments through Ed AND you do not use the Google Classroom, Schoology, or Canvas gradebooks.

💡 Tip: If you use multiple platforms in your teaching, select the one your students use most often for assignments and grading. That will help minimize confusion and extra setup steps.

After finalizing your roster source, archive all other imported rosters to ensure a streamlined setup and prevent assignments from being assigned to the wrong classes.
