How do I set up Writable with Canvas as an administrator?

Set up Writable in Canvas (for Canvas administrators)

The following instructions will walk you through the steps required to access all available features between Writable and Canvas.

School or District Tech Admin, please fill out this form. If you are not an admin, please forward these instructions to your school or district Canvas Administrator. Only a Canvas Administrator can complete the setup steps.

Even if you have previously used Canvas with Writable, please fill out the form to receive our latest Canvas functionality. Email us at support@writable.com with any questions.


Step 1: Configure the API Key

  1. Create a new Developer Key under 'Admin' → 'Developer Keys.'

  2. Click the '+Developer Key' button.

  3. Choose an '+ API Key.'

  4. Fill in these fields and click ‘Save.

    ​Key Name: ‘Writable API’

    Owner Email: <your email>

  5. Change State to 'ON.'


Step 2: Configure the LTI Key

  1. Create a new Developer Key under 'Admin' → 'Developer Keys.'

  2. Click the '+Developer Key' button.

  3. Choose '+ LTI Key.'

  4. Fill in these fields and click ‘Save.'

  5. Change State to ‘ON.’

  6. Record the ‘Client ID’ associated with your new Developer Key and copy it somewhere handy.


Step 3: Add 'Writable' as an 'External App.'

1. Navigate to 'Admin' → 'Settings' → 'Apps' and click 'View App Configurations.'

2. Click ‘+ App’ to configure a new External App.

3. Choose 'By Client ID' and enter the ‘Client ID’ that you recorded from the LTI Developer Key.

4. Click 'Install'.


Sub-Accounts: Add 'Writable' as an 'External App.'

  1. Navigate to 'Admin' → 'Apps.'

  2. Click 'Manage.'

  3. Search for 'Writable.'

  4. Click 'Add Exception.'

  5. Search for the sub-account or click on the drop down arrow.

  6. Click on the drop down arrow and select 'Available.'

  7. Click 'Save.'

  8. Click on the pencil icon to 'Edit Exception.'

  9. Click on the drop down arrow and select 'Not Available.'

  10. Click 'Save.'
