Our Commitment to Safety
WXLLSPACE is deeply committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone involved in our mural projects—artists, assistants, property owners, and the public. The following protocol outlines mandatory safety standards for every phase of a project. Compliance with these guidelines is required for all contracted artists to prevent accidents, injuries, property damage, and theft. Safety is a shared responsibility, and every artist working with WXLLSPACE must uphold these standards.
Official WXLLSPACE Mural Safety Guidelines
This section details the formal safety requirements for all WXLLSPACE projects.
General Safety Requirements
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Always wear safety glasses, gloves, respiratory masks (when handling aerosols or chemicals), and sturdy, slip-resistant footwear.
Work Area Cleanliness
Maintain a clutter-free workspace at all times to reduce tripping and other hazards.
Hydration and Rest
Take regular breaks and stay hydrated, especially when working in hot or strenuous conditions.
Avoid horseplay, and minimize non-essential distractions like mobile phone use during critical tasks.
Specific Hazard Mitigation
Working at Heights
Use appropriate fall protection (e.g., harnesses) when working above 6 feet.
Inspect all ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lifts for defects before each use. Only trained and certified individuals may operate lifts.
Secure tools and materials to prevent them from falling.
Handling Chemicals and Materials
Store all substances (paints, solvents, etc.) in labeled, sealed containers away from heat sources.
Ensure proper ventilation when applying chemicals or using aerosols.
Clean all spills immediately with appropriate materials.
Electrical Safety
Inspect all power cords and electrical tools for damage before use. Never use them in wet or damp conditions.
Avoid overloading electrical outlets and keep cords clear of walkways. Use only grounded equipment per the manufacturer's guidelines.
Fire Safety
Prohibit smoking or open flames near any flammable materials.
Store flammable materials in approved safety containers.
Keep a Type ABC fire extinguisher within 50 feet of the work site.
Weather Conditions
Suspend work during hazardous weather, including high winds, lightning, or heavy rain/snow.
Dress in appropriate layers for cold conditions; use shade, wear hats, and hydrate frequently in the heat.
Monitor weather forecasts and inform your WXLLSPACE project manager of any potential schedule changes due to weather.
Physical Ergonomics & Noise Control
Use proper lifting techniques: lift with your knees bent and back straight.
Stretch regularly during repetitive or prolonged tasks to prevent strain.
Use ear protection if equipment noise exceeds 85 decibels (dB).
Traffic Safety
Use cones, barriers, or caution tape to clearly isolate your work area from public access.
Wear high-visibility clothing when working near active roads, parking lots, or public pathways.
Coordinate with WXLLSPACE for any specific local traffic control requirements.
Site Security and Theft Prevention
Lock up valuable materials and tools in a secure location when not in use, especially overnight.
Maintain an inventory of all materials and equipment on site.
Report any theft or suspicious activity to both local authorities and your WXLLSPACE project manager immediately.
Emergency Preparedness
First Aid and Emergency Contacts
Know the location of the first aid kit and how to use its contents.
Maintain a readily accessible list of emergency contacts, including 911, your WXLLSPACE project manager, and the address of the nearest hospital or urgent care center.
Site Evacuation Plan
Review the site-specific evacuation plan and emergency meeting points with WXLLSPACE before the project begins.
Required Training and Education
Complete any required WXLLSPACE safety training before your project start date.
Participate in any on-site safety briefings as required.
Be prepared to present proof of completed training or certifications (e.g., for lift operation).
Equipment Management & Inspection
Inspect all tools and equipment (personal and rental) daily for any defects or damage.
Use all equipment only as intended and according to safety guidelines.
Return any rental equipment within 5 business days after project completion.
Incident Reporting Protocol
Report all incidents—including injuries, property damage, or significant safety concerns—to your WXLLSPACE project manager within 24 hours via phone or email.
Submit a detailed written report of the incident within 48 hours.
Cooperate fully with any follow-up investigations to help improve future safety efforts.
Your Daily Artist Safety & Preparation Checklist
This checklist is a streamlined companion to the official guidelines. Use it daily to ensure you are prepared and working safely.
Phase 1: Before You Arrive On-Site
Confirm Site Access & Readiness
Confirm the correct address, your start time, and your on-site point of contact.
Ensure any required access equipment (lifts, ladders) has been arranged.
Check the weather forecast and prepare accordingly.
Gather Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Safety glasses
Gloves (for priming, painting, or chemical use)
Respirator mask (for aerosols or fumes)
Work boots (slip-resistant)
Hat and sunscreen for outdoor work
Pack Daily Essentials
Ample water and snacks
Phone charger or backup power bank
Small personal first aid kit
Notebook for on-site notes
Phase 2: Daily On-Site Safety Prep
Inspect the Workspace
Walk the perimeter of your wall to identify tripping hazards, uneven ground, or obstacles.
Ensure any nearby materials or tools belonging to other site personnel are secure.
Check Your Equipment
Inspect ladders and lifts for stability and defects before use.
Confirm lift operators are certified (if you are not self-operating). Never operate unfamiliar equipment without proper training.
Establish a Safety Zone
Use cones, caution tape, or signage to clearly mark your work area.
Keep your materials and gear organized within this zone to avoid clutter.
Communicate clearly with any other site personnel or contractors working nearby.
Phase 3: Managing Assistants or Team Members
Ensure assistants are fully briefed on the safety zone and PPE requirements.
Assign tasks that are within their skill and comfort levels.
Avoid overcrowding on ladders, scaffolding, or lifts.
Encourage open communication and monitor for signs of fatigue or unsafe behavior.
Phase 4: Daily End-of-Day Checklist
Secure Materials and Equipment
Store paint, chemicals, and tools in a designated safe, dry, and secure area.
Lock any valuable equipment if it must be stored on-site overnight.
Sweep and clean your immediate workspace.
