WXLLSPACE Mural Safety Guidelines

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Introduction and Purpose

WXLLSPACE is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals involved in our mural projects—artists, assistants, property owners, and the public. This protocol outlines mandatory safety standards for every phase of a mural project: planning, installation, and completion. These guidelines are designed to prevent accidents, injuries, illnesses, property damage, and theft. Compliance is required for all contracted artists.

General Safety Guidelines

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses, gloves, respiratory masks (when handling chemicals), and sturdy footwear.

  • Work Area Cleanliness: Maintain a clutter-free workspace to reduce tripping hazards.

  • Hydration and Rest: Take regular breaks and stay hydrated, especially in hot conditions.

  • No Horseplay or Distractions: Avoid mobile phones and unsafe behavior during work.

Specific Hazard Mitigation

Working at Heights

  • Use fall protection above 6 feet.

  • Inspect ladders, scaffolding, and lifts before use; only trained individuals may operate them.

  • Secure tools to prevent falling objects.

Handling Chemicals and Materials

  • Store all substances in labeled, sealed containers away from heat.

  • Ensure proper ventilation when applying chemicals.

  • Clean spills immediately with appropriate materials.

Electrical Safety

  • Inspect cords and tools before use; never use in wet conditions.

  • Avoid overloading outlets and keep cords away from walkways.

  • Use only grounded equipment per manufacturer guidelines.

Fire Safety

  • No smoking or open flames near flammables.

  • Store flammable materials in approved containers.

  • Keep a Type ABC extinguisher within 50 feet of the site.

Weather Conditions

  • Suspend work during high winds, lightning, or heavy rain.

  • Dress in layers for cold; use shade and hydrate in heat.

  • Monitor forecasts and inform WXLLSPACE of schedule changes.

Physical Ergonomics

  • Lift with knees bent and back straight.

  • Stretch during repetitive or prolonged tasks.

  • Use ergonomic tools and supports where possible.

Noise Control

  • Use ear protection if equipment exceeds 85 dB.

  • Rotate tasks and use low-noise alternatives when feasible.

Traffic Safety

  • Use cones, barriers, or tape to isolate work areas.

  • Wear high-visibility clothing near roads or public areas.

  • Coordinate with WXLLSPACE for local traffic control requirements.

Security and Theft Prevention

  • Lock up materials and tools when not in use.

  • Report theft or suspicious activity immediately.

  • Maintain an inventory of all materials and equipment.

Emergency Preparedness

First Aid and Emergency Response

  • Know the location of first aid kits and how to use them.

  • Maintain a list of emergency contacts, including 911, WXLLSPACE ([insert contact]), and nearest hospital.

  • Review the site-specific evacuation plan with WXLLSPACE.

Training and Education

  • Complete WXLLSPACE safety training before project start.

  • Participate in refreshers and safety briefings as required.

  • Maintain and present proof of completed training.

Equipment Management

  • Inspect all tools and equipment daily.

  • Use only as intended and per safety guidelines.

  • Return rental equipment within 5 business days post-project.

Reporting and Communication

  • Report all incidents to WXLLSPACE within 24 hours via phone/email ([insert contact]).

  • Submit a written report within 48 hours.

  • Cooperate fully with investigations to support prevention efforts.

Adherence to these guidelines is non-negotiable. Safety is a shared responsibility, and every mural artist working under WXLLSPACE must uphold these standards.
