Safety & Equipment Requirements

Updated over a month ago

Safety protects artists, property owners, and the public. WXLLSPACE requires compliance with local laws and platform-specific safety protocols throughout mural projects.

General Expectations

  • All parties must abide by federal, state, and municipal safety regulations.

  • Artists must follow WXLLSPACE’s safety guidelines, which include wearing personal protective equipment and safe use of tools.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Artists should have:

  • Hard hats and safety helmets when working at heights or around heavy equipment.

  • Safety harnesses and fall-protection systems for elevated workspaces.

  • Protective eyewear and respirators when spraying or sanding.

  • Gloves, reflective vests, and proper footwear.

WXLLSPACE may provide some equipment (e.g., lift rental), but artists are responsible for personal gear unless otherwise agreed.

Site Preparation Responsibilities

  • Property Owner Responsibilities

    • Provide safe access (e.g., keys, ladders, scaffolding) and ensure the work area is clear of hazards.

    • Supply utilities (electricity, water) and secure storage if needed.

    • Obtain any required permits or approvals (e.g., permits for street closure or scaffold installation).

  • Artist Responsibilities

    • Conduct an initial safety check before starting.

    • Report unsafe conditions immediately and pause work until resolved.

    • Keep the workspace clean and organised to prevent accidents.

Hazard Mitigation

  • Working at Height

    • Never stand on improvised platforms.

    • Use certified scaffolding, lifts, or ladders and secure them properly.

  • Traffic Management

    • When working near roads, use cones, barriers, and reflective signage.

    • Hire professional traffic control if necessary.

  • Environmental Hazards

    • Test surfaces for lead paint or asbestos where applicable.

    • Use dust masks and ventilation when sanding or spraying.

Emergency Procedures

  • Have a first aid kit on site.

  • Know local emergency numbers and the nearest hospital or clinic.

  • Stop work during hazardous weather (e.g., high winds, thunderstorms).

  • Document incidents and report them to WXLLSPACE support promptly.

Inspections & Compliance

  • WXLLSPACE may inspect sites to verify safety compliance.

  • Failure to meet safety standards can result in delays, additional costs, or project termination.

FAQs

Who arranges scaffolding or lift rentals?
Property owners typically coordinate heavy equipment rentals, but this should be defined in the contract. Artists can request specific equipment if required.

What if safety issues delay the project?
Work must stop until conditions are safe. WXLLSPACE will help coordinate resolutions and adjust timelines as needed.

Are there weather conditions that require halting work?
Yes. Heavy rain, high winds, extreme temperatures, and lightning can create unsafe conditions. Consult WXLLSPACE’s weather guidelines for specifics.
