There are 3 major categories of pergolas: freestanding, attached, and cantilivered.

Freestanding Pergolas

These are square or rectangular and include vertical support posts at each corner, and sometimes in the center, depending on size. These can be custom designed or prefabricated - most Yardzen clients find prefabricated options best for their budget and style.

Attached Pergolas

These are best for yards where connectedness between the interior of the home and the exterior is a priority. They can also be useful in small yards areas where you’d like to avoid having to weave around pergola posts. Attached pergolas only have vertical columns on one side, and the other side attaches to the existing house or other structure.

Attached pergolas often require a permit to install, which can make them more expensive or complex to install than freestanding pergolas.

Cantilevered Pergolas

These fit well in small spaces since they only require vertical supports on one side. They’re usually custom and tend to be quite expensive and difficult to construct. If budget is a concern, an alternative might be better suited for your project.
