What is a Family Game?

Written by Mandycore the Manticore

What is a family game?

A family game is a private Young Heroes adventure that a certified DM runs just for your family. Everyone in your household can play at the same table, and you can invite another family to join if you want a bigger group.

Because Young Heroes games are built for kids, family games are always private. The only players at the table are the ones you invite.

A guardian plays too

Family games are different from our public sessions in one important way. A guardian has to be at the table and playing alongside their own children for the whole session. You are not just supervising from the couch; you are part of the adventure.

If a second family joins, one guardian from that family needs to be playing as well.

How it works

  1. Browse our DMs at https://kids.startplaying.games/game-masters and find someone whose style fits your family.

  2. Message the DM and ask about their availability for a family game. It helps to mention how many players you have and their ages.

  3. Once you have settled on the details, the DM creates a family game adventure and sends you a private link.

  4. Use the link to claim your seats.

  5. If another family is joining, share the link with them. One guardian from that family creates their own Young Heroes account, completes consent for their children, and books their own seats.

  6. Show up and play.

Seats and pricing

Who needs a seat

Every player at the table, including the guardian who is playing

Price

Starts at $25 per seat. Your DM sets their own price

Example

A guardian playing with two children books three seats

Table size

Set by your DM. Ask when you message about availability

A note on very small tables

If you have one child, a family game could only be two people. We do not set a minimum table size, so it comes down to the DM.

Some DMs prefer a few more players so the group has more to work with.

Ask when you first message them, and if they would rather not run a two-person game, they can point you toward a public session or suggest inviting another family along.
