What are waste emissions?
Waste emissions are greenhouse gases released from the disposal and decomposition of your organisation's waste materials. This includes:
Methane from waste decomposing in landfills
Carbon dioxide from waste incineration
Emissions from waste transportation and processing
Emissions from recycling processes
Why are they important for my organisation?
These emissions are significant because they often represent a substantial portion of an SME's environmental impact. Additionally, waste emissions are typically one of the easier areas to address through waste reduction and recycling programs, offering quick wins for environmental improvements.
How can I input this into Zellar?
If you have completed mission 1 & 2, you should be able to visit the emissions page which will allow you to add more data. Select the year you have calculated this for and enter the final figure '5. Waste generated in operations' section on the dropdown.
What next?
Here are a few ideas on what you can do next - all of these actions can be found under projects.
Implement a comprehensive recycling program
Set waste reduction targets
Train staff on proper waste segregation
Partner with sustainable waste management providers
Switch to recyclable or compostable materials
Implement paperless processes where possible
Consider composting organic waste
Regular waste audits to identify reduction opportunities
