How do missions relate to my emissions?
Missions are the practical steps users can walk through within the Zellar platform to calculate, understand, and reduce their emissions.
Missions will help you to:
Understand what information you need to collect to be able to calculate your emissions
Do the calculations for you!
Once completed, you will be able to:
Identify areas and opportunities for reducing emissions
Set targets for emission reduction
Track progress over time
Share these figures internally and externally through reports
Emissions
What frameworks do Zellar align to?
Zellar's emission calculation aligns with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and ISO-14001. Emission factors are based on the latest UK government CO2e conversion factors. This includes zero emissions for electricity suppliers that buy 100% of their energy from renewable or zero-carbon sources. All factors are updated annually.
How often are the emissions factors updated?
The emission factors will be updated in line with the latest available data. Where the change in emissions factors has the potential to increase or decrease a user’s total footprint by more than 10%, then the emissions in that area will be back-calculated for all users.
The UK government’s emissions factors are updated when the in-year Greenhouse gas reporting: conversion factors report is released. This typically occurs in the middle of each year.
What emissions are included within Zellar?
Mission 1: Energy
Electricity, gas and oil, as well as any petrol/diesel usage for equipment such as lawnmowers or generators
Refrigerants from cooling systems
Mission 2: Travel
Owned vehicles, business travel, commuting and homeworking
Mission 3: Targets
This mission looks at starting to set targets across missions 1 & 2, as well as longer-term targets around net zero.

My electricity usage has gone down but my carbon emissions has gone up. How does this work?
Zellar calculates carbon emissions using official UK government emission factors, which are updated each year in line with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. These factors depend on the overall energy mix in the national grid.
Even if you use less electricity, your carbon emissions may still increase if the proportion of green energy in the grid has decreased. For example, from 2022 to 2023, the UK’s electricity emissions factor slightly increased due to changes in how electricity was generated.
To get the full picture, it's important to consider both your electricity usage and the emissions factor for that year.
