OCR Utility

This article provides guidance on the Zylpha OCR utility

Updated this week

The Zylpha OCR utility can be used to apply OCR to image (.bmp, .gif, .png, .wmf, .emf, .jpeg), TIF and PDF files. OCR is the process of converting an “image” of text into searchable text. This can be a photograph of a page of text or a scanned image of a document. The process of OCR has been around for decades and the technology in this area has improved greatly but it is important to note that it is not 100% guaranteed and does rely on a range of factors including the quality of the original document (eg the process will be less accurate for a badly scanned image or grainy photograph of a document).

The OCR utility is intended for use on individual documents before they are added to a bundle (documents with OCR retain their OCR state after bundle generation).

To begin applying OCR to your documents, you must first navigate to the OCR utility. This can be found by clicking "Utilities" in the menu, and then selecting the OCR utility.

With the OCR utility open, select your document and it's save location; this is explained below:

  1. File to OCR - Click in this field and then select the PDF document you wish to apply OCR to. You can either use the File Explorer built in to Zylpha or click Browse and use Windows File Explorer.

  2. Save location - This field will tell you where the OCR'ed PDF will be saved. It will default to the same location that the original file is from. If this is not the desired destination you can edit the path manually, or use the File Explorer to select the save location.

  3. View PDF document - Checking this box will automatically open the OCR'ed document after OCR is complete.

  4. OCR - Clicking this button will apply OCR to your selected document and save this to your selected save location.
