Valve log and status check
Valve log and status check
Updated over 2 months ago

A valve log represents a valve operation and a status check represents a validation of the current status of the valve (Open, Closed or Partly Open).

  • Open - currently represented by the color green

  • Closed - currently represented by the color red

  • Partly open - currently represented by the color yellow

Valve list

The valve list gives an overview of all the valves and their current status:

From the valve list you can navigate directly to the valve logs for that particular valve.

Valve logs

The valve logs represents a timeline of both logs and status checks

The status check is represented by a symbol:

Is this valve log part of a plan?

If this valvelog is created as part of a plan it will be marked with the name of the plan:

You can then easily navigate to that plan

Adding log and status check

You select if you want to add a log or a status check by selecting the correct link:

Adding a log

When adding a log you need to provide time and date and the final position:

When adding a log you also get information about "Turns to open" and "Do not exceed torque", so that you do not need to navigate back to the valve data overview to retrieve that information. Also, to make it easier for the user, some information is populated based on the previous (if any) log entry. This applies to Operator, Worksite and initial position. Time is set to NOW.

  1. Time - time of valve operation (Mandatory).

    1. NB: The date is shown as per your browser settings (so it could be dd/mm/yyyy or mm/dd/yyyy), so please pay extra attention to this when looking at the valve log overviews later (as that is shown as per your browser settings too).

    2. The time is stored as UTC values. Just input the actual time of the operation for the regional time zone that you are in currently. Again, the time shown in the valve log overview will be displayed as per your browser settings, either showing the time as a 24-hour clock variation or with the AM/PM variation.

  2. Operator - company responsible for this valve operation execution, e.g a third party contractor

  3. Worksite - worksite and/or vessel responsible for the valve operation

  4. Initial position - initial position as found valve position

  5. Final position - final position as left valve position (Mandatory)

  6. Break out torque (Nm) - end-to-close, start-to-open torque applied in Nm

  7. Max running torque (Nm) - max running torque measured in Nm after valve break out

  8. Actual turns - number of turns required to change valve position

  9. Comments - free text to describe valve operation such as observations, special circumstances

  10. As-found image - you can add an image of the valve as you found it

  11. As-left image - you can add an image of the valve as you left it

Adding a status check

When adding a status check you are only confirming the current valve position (status):

  1. Time - time of the status check (Mandatory)

  3. Worksite - worksite and or vessel responsible for the valve operation

  4. Final position - final as left valve position (Mandatory)

  5. Comments - free text to describe valve operation such as observations, special circumstances

  6. As-left image - you can add an image of the valve as you left it

Editing a log or status check

At any time you can navigate to the log section for a valve:

There you can click on the pencil to start editing:

Make the change and save:

Editing the pictures

You can also edit the pictures by first deleting it and then add a new one:

Deleting Valve Logs and Checks

You can delete valve logs and status checks (please use with caution as you will not be able to retrieve the delete log/check). To be able to delete, your access rights role must be that of either Manager or Administrator (NB: the same role as required to create and/or edit valve logs and checks).

When you are signed in (as a Manager or Administrator), you will now be able to see the 'trash bin' (delete) icon next to the 'pen' (edit) icon.

The Overview tab will display the last log entry time and last final position. As usual, the information is taken from the Logs tab and the relevant valve history. So in the above example, this is the information (valve operated to partly open on 19/06/2024 at 08:05am) that will be displayed on the Overview tab:

To start the process to delete a log, click on the 'trash bin' icon

You will need to confirm your decision to delete the log. So if you clicked the delete icon in error, you can just click 'No' in the confirmation pop-up window and the log/check is not deleted.

When you have confirmed the deletion of the log/check, there will be a confirmation message displayed at the lower right hand corner of your browser for 3 seconds and then disappear automatically.

The Overview tab will now reflect the details from the Logs tab (valve checked as Closed on 26/10/2023 at 15:43 (3:43pm)) , which corresponds to the last know and visible entry of the valve log/check history.

When a valve log/check entry is part of a plan

There is a built-in security process that will run a check on any log or check (that is confirmed to be deleted) if the entry is connected to a plan. In this case, if a valve log/check is part of a plan and has been added via the plan page, then the system will not allow you to delete the valve log/check.

The steps to delete a valve log/check that is part of a plan is to move the plan back to the Planning stage.

Then you can delete the individual line item for the relevant valve. Confirm your deletion with a Yes in the pop-up window.

You can now add the specific valve operation as a line item to the plan again (NB: remember to place the valve operation at the correct order in the plan if needed).

P&ID - visualizing valve status

If you use the dynamic P&ID functionality you will instantly the latest valves status (taken from the last final position information of the specific valve Overview) visualized by color coding (Green = Open, Yellow = Partly Open, Red = Closed):

If you need to manage your own P&IDs you can read this article: P&IDs - Creating an interactive P&ID using Inkscape | 4insight (intercom.help)
