This guide walks you through setting up Aftersell’s post-purchase funnel from start to finish, from creating your trigger to customizing post-purchase offers and optimizing your thank-you page.
Aftersell seamlessly integrates into your Shopify checkout flow, allowing you to deliver targeted offers immediately after a purchase without disrupting the customer experience.
Setting up your first funnel
To create your first funnel, simply add a new funnel, give it a name, then select Save and Continue. If you'd like to learn more about post-purchase funnels and how they work, check out this article.
Triggers
Triggers can be utilized to display a funnel in particular situations, and they can be combined to effectively highlight funnels for specific scenarios.
What triggers do
Triggers enable you to control exactly when and with whom a funnel appears. They act like filters or rules so that your funnel is shown only under specific conditions such as certain products, cart value or customer attributes
Benefits of using triggers in funnels
Increase relevance and conversions – Show personalized offers based on what the customer purchased (e.g., display a “Shoes” funnel after a shoe purchase).
Avoid irrelevant offers – Exclude specific products, collections, discount codes, or regions where offers don’t apply.
Personalize by customer type – Target new or returning customers and tailor offers using tags or order history.
Run smarter campaigns – Use random-sample triggers for testing or date/time triggers for limited-time promotions.
Maximize ROI – Focus your efforts where they’re most effective and maintain a smooth, trustworthy post-purchase experience.
Show for All Customers Trigger
A “Catch-All” funnel uses the Show for All Customers trigger.
This funnel does not look for any conditions and activates when an order doesn’t meet the conditions of any other funnel, acting as a safety net to ensure every customer still sees an upsell or thank-you page offer.
If you have other funnels created, set this funnel to the lowest priority so it only appears when no other funnel is triggered.

Post Purchase Upsell Offer
Once you’ve selected your triggers, proceed to the next step to create your offers.
Below is a quick overview of how the offer flow works:
Add your offer products
Choose the type of upsell you'd like to offer. There are a few different options to choose from:
Single Product
Specific product - Choose a specific product to display to your customers. This can be a popular item or one you’d like to promote more.
Automatic upsell - Uses Shopify’s AI to suggest a complementary product based on what’s currently in the customer’s cart.
Most expensive/Least expensive in cart - Re-offers the item from the customer’s original order that was either the most or least expensive.
Multi Product
Specific products - Choose multiple (up to 12) specific product to display to your customers at once
Collection - Choose a specific collection for your customers to see
Automatic upsell - Uses Shopify’s AI to suggest multiple complementary products based on what’s currently in the customer’s cart.
Please note that only one product per upsell offer can be accepted at a time, unless you’re using multi-step offers. To learn more, check out this article on multi-step upsells.
These upsell offers add to your customer’s order, they don’t replace items already in the cart.

Customize your offers
Once your offer products are chosen, you'll want to customize your offers to match your store's branding and focus on why the customer should add the upsell.
Each widget helps you build an offer that matches your brand and connects with your customers.
Here’s a quick rundown of the widgets you can add:
Text – Add headlines, short descriptions, or supporting text that explains why the offer is worth grabbing. Keep it simple and persuasive.
Timer – Create urgency by showing a countdown timer (perfect for limited-time offers).
Upsell Product – This is where you can choose whether your offer is to be shown as a one-time purchase, subscription or both!
You can customize the product selection, apply a discount, or include a badge (like “Bestseller” or “New”)
Your post purchase branding will directly match your Shopify checkout branding. This means that there's no settings within AfterSell to edit colours, fonts, etc. However, you are able to make that change in your Shopify Admin settings. Check out this article to learn more.
Keep in mind, there can be a small visual bug within the editor and it may not show colours accurately. We recommend placing a test order to ensure everything matches your Shopify Admin settings.
Once you're happy with your offers and customizations, you're ready to move on to the final step of your funnel - The Thank You Page.
Thank You Page
The Thank You page is your chance to bring customers back for more! Use this space to encourage repeat purchases, share product recommendations, and strengthen brand loyalty.
To get started, click “Edit Extensions Page” this opens the editor where you can customize your Thank You page.
Make the Most of Your Thank You Page
You can personalize your Thank You page using a variety of widgets. These let you highlight key products, answer customer questions, and add engaging content that keeps shoppers connected to your brand.
Here are a few popular ways to use them:
Product Recommendations – Use specific products, automatic upsells or collections to drive repeat purchases.
FAQs – Answer common questions to build trust and reduce support inquiries.
Text or Image Widgets – Share thank-you messages, brand stories, or special offers like discount codes.
Custom Code – Add unique content or connect other tools for an even more personalized experience.

Important Information
Once you're happy with your Thank you Page widgets, you'll need to add them to both the Thank you and order status pages in the Shopify editor. Skipping this step will cause the thank you page widgets to not display for your customers.
Add the Aftersell TY widgets in your Shopify Editor in two locations:
Thank you page
Order status page
Once you've placed the app blocks on both the thank you and order status page, make sure to enable the widget and save your work.
Now that everything has been set up, you can set the status of funnel to active
Note: If the product recommendation on the Thank You page is accepted, it will generate a new, separate order.

To get started with the smart funnel, you'll first want to click enable.
From here, you can customize your Smart Funnel to fit your store’s goals:
Traffic Allocation: Decide how much of your traffic you want to run through the Smart Funnel instead of manual funnels.
Max Discount: Set the highest discount the Smart Funnel can offer to your shoppers.
Default Products: The Smart Funnel automatically uses AI-recommended upsells to help boost revenue.
Skip Products in Original Order: Choose whether to exclude items your shoppers already have in their original order.
Highlighted Product (optional): Feature a specific product you’d like to spotlight in the funnel.
Funnel Priority
Smart Funnel is set to Priority 0, so its offers appear before any manual funnels when eligibility criteria are met.
