Image Conversion Settings

Overview

PXM makes several variants of every image you upload. Variants are different sizes and formats you can use across your digital channels. Image Conversion settings control what those variants look like: their pixel size, file formats, quality, and how they are sized.

These settings apply to your whole PXM site. For most images, PXM creates each size and format the first time it is requested, using your current settings.

How to open Image Conversion

  1. Open the left sidebar and click Settings.

  2. Click the Assets tab at the top.

  3. Click Image Conversion. It is next to Media Stack Group.

The page opens on Image Variant Transcoding.

Constrain Variant Images by

At the top of the page, Constrain Variant Images by sets whether each section's Size applies to the image's Height or Width. Choose one. This is a single setting for your whole site, and it applies to every tier and format.

Size tiers

Image Conversion has four size tiers: Large, Medium, Small, and Thumb. Each tier has its own section for each file format, and you can set each section on its own:

  • Large: Large JPG and Large PNG/WEBP

  • Medium: Medium JPG and Medium PNG/WEBP

  • Small: Small JPG and Small PNG/WEBP

  • Thumb: Thumb WEBP and Thumb PNG

PXM always makes a thumbnail for every image.

Settings reference

Every section has Size and Quality. The other options depend on the format.

Size (px)
The largest size, in pixels, for this section. Constrain Variant Images by decides whether it applies to the height or the width. For example, if Large JPG is set to 2,600 px and you constrain by Height, Large JPG images are resized to 2,600 px tall.

Quality (%)
How much the file is compressed, as a percentage. Quality defaults to 95%.

Transparent Pixels Color (JPG sections)
The color that fills transparent areas, since JPG files cannot be transparent. For example, #FFFFFF fills them with white.

Options

  • Convert Images to JPG (JPG sections), Convert Images to PNG and Convert Images to WEBP (PNG/WEBP sections), or Convert Images to WEBP / Convert Images to PNG (Thumb sections): turns that format on for the section.

  • Include in Download: makes this variant available when files are downloaded.

  • Convert Layers and Layers to Include (Large, Medium, and Small sections): for layered files, choose whether to convert layers, then pick which layers (Layer 1 to Layer 4) to include.

The Thumb sections only have Size, Quality, the Convert Images option, and Include in Download.

Save your changes

After you edit any setting, click Save changes at the bottom right of the page. The button stays greyed out ("No changes to save") until you change something.

Important: when changes take effect

For most images, PXM creates each size and format the first time it is requested, using your current settings. So your changes apply to those images without reconverting.

Some older images, mostly those uploaded before late July 2026, may still use their original sizes. Use Convert on those images if you need the new settings. Links you already copied keep the size and format they were made with.

How to reconvert older images

  1. Go to the files you want to update.

  2. Select the images you want to reconvert.

  3. Click the three dots menu (⋯) at the bottom of the screen.

  4. Click Convert. Conversion starts right away.

  5. PXM remakes the variants for those files using your current Image Conversion settings.

⚠️ Important: Only reconvert 100 to 200 images at a time. Converting too many at once can make the system stop responding.

Find file variants

After files are converted, you can find their variants in File Details:

  1. Search for the file and click it to open File Details.

  2. Open the Variants section on the right side of the page.

  3. Each variant shows its file type and size.

  4. Click Open Link to view the file, or Copy Link to copy its CDN link.

Note: Some files cannot have size variants. For those, PXM may make only a preview and a thumbnail. Some files, such as .zip files, get no preview or thumbnail.
