Add a new configuration to your liquid handler
This article will teach you how to upload a device configuration file for your Tecan Freedom EVO, Tecan Fluent, or Hamilton Star device. Learn more about generating configuration files in the pages linked below.
After generating a device configuration file using the GetConfigTool, you can preview, validate, and upload it to your Synthace device.
Navigate to the Devices inventory in the Synthace platform.
Open the device configuration menu for the device you wish to update.
Upload the device configuration file to the corresponding device using the Add New Configuration button:
This starts the configuration validation process, which includes:
Deck Layout: preview of the uploaded deck layouts
Labware: an overview of recognized and matched labware
Liquid Classes: opportunity to update liquid classes
Deck layout
The first tab displays a preview of the available deck layouts.
Choose which layouts to upload by checking the Select for Upload checkbox. You may also select no deck layouts to be uploaded. This allows you to only update your labware in Synthace without updating the deck layout. All valid deck layouts will automatically be selected for upload.
Use this preview to visually validate the carriers, peripherals, and available labware positions that have been recognized. This preview is informational only and does not allow configuration of the deck layout.
Click the Next button once you are done.
Any errors with any of the deck layouts will be shown here
Labware
The second tab displays all labware items recognized in the device configuration.
Review the Matched and No Match sections to check if the labware items you want to use with Synthace have a matching labware definition in the Synthace Plate Type inventory. Any matched labware items will be available to use across all configurations for this device as long as they have compatible deck positions.
Note: This screen is informational only. If you find that any labware you expect to use is not in the “matched” list, follow the instructions in the “no match” section to amend this, and you might need to restart the process.
Matched tab
The “Matched” list shows the labware items defined in the device software (grey entries) alongside the corresponding Synthace labware inventory definition (entries with a blue icon).
Within the Matched tab, there are two categories:
Exact matches:
These are a one-to-one match from the device software labware item to the Synthace plate inventory plate.
Multiple Synthace plates to one Vendor labware:
This situation arises when there are multiple Synthace plates that correspond to a single labware item in the device configuration. While not inherently problematic, during simulation, the usage of any of these Synthace plates within the workflow will consistently yield the same labware definition in the vendor software.
No match tab
The No Match tab displays all remaining labware items that do not match any Synthace plates. Follow the device-specific instructions to update the labware definitions in the device software or create a Synthace plate to match one of their unmatched labware items.
Please note that if you update or create an entry in the Synthace plate inventory, the device configuration validation dialogue will not be dynamically updated, and it is not necessary to reupload their device configuration as long as the Synthace plate inventory has been correctly updated. You can optionally reupload in order to confirm that the edits were correct.
Click the Add Config to this Device button once you are done. This will update your device configuration, and load the optional step of updating your liquid classes.
Liquid classes
The third tab displays instructions to update the device’s liquid classes available to Synthace. The instructions are device-specific. This step is optional if you have added liquid classes previously.
Tecan liquid handlers
For Tecan liquid handlers, this tab will inform you if new liquid classes (those that exist in the configuration file, but not in Synthace) have been detected in the device configuration file.
Follow the instructions if you wish to update the liquid classes. If you do not wish to update the liquid classes, click Done.
Hamilton liquid handlers
For Hamilton liquid handlers, this tab informs you of whether liquid classes have been created for this device in Synthace. If there are no liquid classes defined in Synthace yet, reach out to your FAS or follow the available documentation to add liquid classes for this device.
Click the Done button once you have completed the process. The new configuration, plates, and liquid classes are available to use.
