Enabling UpCart in a Draft Theme Only

This article outlines how to enable UpCart on your test theme

Updated over a week ago

Overview

While UpCart includes a built-in preview feature that lets you view the cart on your live theme without publishing it to your store (located in the top-left corner next to Cart Status), there are certain scenarios where you may need to test it directly within the theme editor.
Below are the steps to do this without enabling UpCart on your live theme.

Disclaimer:

You will need to enable UpCart on your live theme for a brief moment, but if done properly, this will take less than a minute.

Steps to Follow:

  1. In the UpCart app interface, click the Cart Status dropdown and select Active.

  2. Navigate to Shopify Admin > Online Store > Themes > Live Theme > Customize.

  3. In the top-left corner, select App Embeds, then enable UpCart Bridge.
Note: UpCart is not live on your store yet.

  4. Repeat the previous step for your Draft Theme in the theme library.

  5. Back in the UpCart interface, click Next to proceed to Step 2.

  6. Test compatibility as needed, or set all options to "Yes", then click Next.

  7. In Step 3, click Activate UpCart.
Note: UpCart is now temporarily live on your store.

  8. Return to your Live Theme settings (repeat Steps 2–3) and disable UpCart Bridge.

  9. Success! UpCart is now only active on your Draft Theme.

Note: As outlined in our Quickstart Guide to UpCart, activation requires two steps: enabling the app in the UpCart interface and in your theme’s app embeds.
UpCart won’t activate in the back-end unless it’s also enabled in your live theme’s app embeds (as explained in Step 1 of the onboarding process).
This means you’ll need to temporarily enable it in both your live and draft themes before activating it in the back-end. Once active, you can safely disable the UpCart Bridge (app embed) on your live theme.
