Understanding the 15-Day Holding Period for some 529 Plans

Updated over a week ago

When adding Backpack as a new bank account to your 529 Plan, you might encounter a 15-day holding period before you can withdraw funds. This holding period is a common feature among many 529 Plans to ensure security and proper processing. Other plans may use micro-deposits (depositing two small amounts to your Backpack account) to verify your newly added account is yours.

Here’s what you need to know and do during this time.

What to Do During the Holding Period

While waiting for the holding period to end, you can take proactive steps to ensure your tuition payment is timely and your enrollment is secured. Here’s how:

  1. Setup a Tuition Payment in Backpack: You can initiate a tuition payment setup in Backpack before withdrawing your 529 funds. This preemptive step informs St. Edward’s University that you are in the process of making a payment, thereby securing your enrollment.

  2. Automatic Tuition Payment Processing: Once the holding period ends and you withdraw your funds from your 529 Plan to Backpack, we will automatically process the tuition payment. This ensures a seamless transfer and timely payment of your tuition fees when the funds land in your Backpack account.

By setting up your tuition payment in advance, you can avoid any enrollment issues and ensure that your funds are allocated as soon as they become available.
